No go @ 5th & 37th. They said they sold whatever they had yesterday.

They had a ton of open box Sony digital cameras though.

Well Coreynyc, at least you got an honest answer. I just got back for the one on 5th and 37th (same as you) and was told that the open box ipod's was just a rumor. Damn I wish I had read this thread yesterday. Perhaps we can try the one at Columbus Circle later. I already have an mp3/cd player (Slim X, best hybrid there is), but I want the pc card hd inside.

The guy told me they had sold a 5GB for $100 yesterday.

I plan on hitting Columbus Circle on the way home tonight. I'll post an update at that time.

I just hit the only CrapUSA in South Carolina to my knowledge and NO GO. All they had were full price and in the regular display. Couldn't even find any clearance rack. Nothing but some open box laptops in a cage.

I scored a 5gb Mac version, in the box with cable, charger, software, ect. at 57th/B-Way during lunch today, for $150 with a two year warr. I've actually never seen one of these before, so I don't know what the difference is, but I guess it's the old version ipod. Hopefully it's not difficult to re-format this to work on a windoze pc. Too bad that Apple seems to have made this thing pretty bullet proof to prevent people from swapping out the hard drives for bigger ones.

Here's the long, arduous story for those who care. I went to crapusa this morning and everyone in the store said they didn't have any open box/clearance items. However, I eventually ran into someone who said that they did have a couple in the back, but that I'd have to return when the operations manager got in at noon. I schlepped back at lunch and the ops manager, who was basically a putz, pulled out the 5gb version and said he wanted $199 for it. I balked and said they were selling them at other crapusa stores for $99 in the box, and $49 straight out. He said no way, and then came down to $150 with a two year service plan. When he rang it up, they charged me $89 for the ipod and $69 for the two year, which is $158, so he had to ring it up all over again. I told him that I heard that the store in NY, on 5th ave, sold a two year plan for $29. He said no way. So in the end, I had to bend over, and got the the ipod for $89 but also had to buy the two year "crapusa pocket money" plan for $59. Grand total, $150. Now, it's a long shot, but I'm going to go to a different crapusa and see if I can return the service plan, thus bringing the price down to $89 for the ipod.

Zippin--

I believe that you can get the money back on the warranty because if I recall correctly--under NY State law, consumers have something like 48 hours to back out of a contract.

I AM W-R-O-N-G There is no law applicable in this circumstance, according to NYS website. The 3 day "cooling off" law applies to health club contracts, amongst other things.

Yeah I think I grabbed the last $150 after Langdon. Good deal although there are some minor scratches on the unit. 2-year warranty was included which is good. Can just get it replaced by CompUSA. Salesperson said that formatting the ipod to another platform voids the warranty.

For those interested, here's how to keep the i-pod mac-formatted while using it with a PC:

1. MS Windows: Use Ephpod (www.ephpod.com) with Openmac software.
2. Linux and some open source projects.

Also, if you see any good deals on Creative SB Audigy, it has a firewire port.

Congrats zippin44. I was thinking of heading there, but after all the hassle you got and being forced to get the two year warrenty I may have to pass. I really just wanted this for the hd as someone mentioned that the 10 gb version was $150. Currently 5 gb pc cards can be had for $150, but if I could take a 10gb one out of an iPod (one that I got for $150), I would rather do that. Head to Tom's Hardware for more info on the hd in the iPod. Anyway I still might go. If I do and they have I might just buy it to send to one of you lucky guys who wants one so badly. I'll let you know. I'll be heading over around 4 or so (EST).

Thanks Askani, I'd much appreciate it if you'd consider one of us if you're able to grab one. Thanks again

I'm glad some ATers got in on this. I've never been the "pillage and eBay" type so I figured I'd share. Maybe I should have picked up a few more (I was there right when they were stocking them, I actually had to wait a few minutes before they would let me browse them -- employees get first dibs, I guess) but what the hell. More for everyone else.

Funny thing is I went in for some RAM (PC2100 for $39.99 that I SWEAR was on their website) but it was mispriced I guess. I would have missed the iPods if I hadn't been waiting for them to get the RAM that I didn't even end up buying. When I was leaving the manager told me to "tell your friends about it." Hope he got what he wanted.

I've noticed a problem with the Ephpod software (maybe when teamed up with the Firewire port on the Audigy). I transferred over some of the mp3's to my 20GB iPod, and they were corrupted. But, when I used the Musicmatch software (yuck!), they transferred fine (although I had to often drag and drop twice sometimes before Musicmatch would see the file). If you look at some of the on-line forums for the iPod, some people have had a lot of problems with the Audigy Firewire, since it's not truly specced Firewire (as some people say).

So, you might want to get a regular Firewire port. For me, right now, I have something that works with the Audigy, and it'll do for now until I can experiment more.

Yeah if they have one when I go I will probably buy it. If I decide not to keep it then who ever wants it must PM (first come first serve).

Yeah, so they did force you to buy the warranty, thats what my sister said. I guess its good since if it breaks after the 14 days, you might be able to exchange it for a brand new one. Deals like this though you have to send women in your place for the obvious reasons...

I just got back from 57th st store. The guy was trying to sell me the 5 gig for 199. I didnt bother talking him down.
They have a few 5 gigs and 10 gigs. You gotta ask one of the managers near the cash register. Good Luck

Actually, when the manager and I were negotiating the price, there was no mention of a service contract. I thought we talking $150 for the ipod alone. I was suprised to see that they rang it up $90 for the ipod plus $60 for the two yr contract. That gives me the impression that managers have a lot of laitude in setting their price, and that they somehow get a "kickback" if they sell more service contracts, since they're pure profit. It's all a scam!

Now to figure out how to reformat this thing for windoze!
