I don't know what the Sony VAIO plug looks like, but I do know that there are 4 and 6 pin firewire jacks. You can get a 4pin/6pin cable if that's your issue.

For those making mac play with winblows...

You don't necesarily need to reformat

try this. Its cheaper than Datviz' solution (Ephpod??)
mount a mac drive on PC

For the windows version on a mac I don't think you need anything special, tho the MusicMatch Jukebox Plus windows software may not work (you'll probably need Itoons)

BTW - i thought someone said that their 1394 "plugs" were different on their PC than the standard mac firewire "plug". I never heard of that, Firewire is just apple's trademark the port type is part of the IEEE 1394(a) standard and as far as i know can't vary. I mention 1394a because Firewire 2 is comming out soon and is 1394b (800MB/s)

anyway I'm not 100% certain, so appologies if I'm wrong.

Mac only have 6 pin Firewire ports, the diff is that those two extra pins carry power to a device. That is how the iPod charges right from the computer. Sony and other PC makers sometimes have 4 pin Firewire ports. Those don't carry any power just the data stream. So if you buy an iPod for a PC you need to usually plug the adapter in and charge your iPod before you upload to it.

Another reason why PC's are a pain.

Nope, not my fault Anandtech did this to me. I have to use a proxy server to post while I am home from school because you people banned AOL IP addresses. The proxy host is not the most reliable.

askani, zippin: I'm getting a little confused, since now I'm not sure which one of you I met. Zippin, you and I spoke of the difference with the TAP costs, and that you were there for your bro's b-day, right? If so, then I'm sorry Askani; it must have been corenyc you saw. For the record, I'm tall, wear glasses, was wearing grey flannel pants, and was ranting at the customer service desk about what's wrong with customer service today, lol. So, which one of you was it
??

Erik

PS. Askani, what time are you going to be there with that receipt? I'd like to do a pricematch to it, save another $35. Can you PM me? Thanks.

ErikaeanLogic, I think that was definently me you met. I must have missed out on your ranting though. Get this, my friend who got it for $205 (total), got a 10gb iPod with a 5gb box though. So on his receipt it says 5gb. Thats why he got the price he did. Most likely they charged him $150 for the 5gb and $50 for the product replacement. I told him he should go back with it today and make sure he gets reciept or something saying he got a 10gb, cause I have a feeling if it breaks they will screw him over. Though he was told be a lady that he will be upgraded if anything becuase they are discontinuing the 5gb model.

You guys with warrantees, did they give you any other documentation besides the receipt with the iPod and a 2 Yr C/I Rpl listed?

OK. First of all, ErikaeanLogic, I think you were talking to me. All my hiking gear is ArcTeryx, and I noticed your black fleece because I have the same one. I was wearing a dark green corduroy coat, and yes, you mentioned to me that they had documentation explaining the different guarantees.

Kevin000, my warrantee is simply the receipt, where it says TAP 2yr RPL PDA $59.99

I still believe I talked to you ErikaeanLogic, I remember the guy I was talking to wearing grey pants and having glasses. He was also tall. Maybe an inch or so taller or more (I'm 6 ft). We met on the left side of the line. Then later on you moved to the right side on the wall next to the elevator (I believe).

Went to 2 CompUSAs before getting my replacement ear0buds. Went to Edison NJ store and the guy there was a prick. He was trying to sell them to me instead of giving me a swap saying I only payed $69 for it, so the warranty would reimburse me $69. I just half listened to him because he was a mook. He even looked for iPod ear-buds to sell me but they didnt have any. Having no job and lots of free time, I drove from the Edison NJ store to the Freehold NJ store. I went to the Customer Service desk and what a different story. I told him I bought the iPod 2 days ago and the earbuds don't work. He calls someone on the phone because he didn't know what to do. Then he runs over to the Apple Station and grabs an Ear Bud/Remote Kit and swapped the ear-buds for me. No questions asked, and it didn't even look like he inspected the reciept. Just looked at is for a split second. And yes, I tried to convince him to give me the remote at a discount but I really didn't feel putting up a fight and I'm not sure there were any other CompUSAs near by.

As always, YMMV...

One of the iPods I got doesn't hold charge so I went into CompUSA (different store than where I had purchased it) and they said they will not honor my TAP because I paid way below cost for the iPod. I complanied that if they aren't going to honor it, why sell it to me and they won't refund my TAP. The supervisor was such a b!tch and pretty much just walked away. So what can I do??

Try another Comp USA store
Dispute charge with credit card company (if you paid with one)
Try their corporate offices (I think they're in Dallas)
Contact local Better Business Bureau (this usually gets results for me)
Contact local government consumer affairs divison and/or state attorney general
Contact local TV news consumer reporter (they love to make big chains look bad)
Take them to small claims court (if all else fails)

One word, fraudulent! Like I said before, these guys are playing games with the extended warantees and pocketing the money. See one of my previous posts in this thread. They told me the ipod I wanted would be $199 and I balked. Then the manager says, "how much do you want to pay for it." So that tells me they have all kinds of leeway in determining the price. $150 was as low as he'd go, so I settled for that. However, they rang it up as $89 for the ipod and $59 for an extended warantee. When I said that I didn't want the warantee, he said I had to buy it, which is obviously, BS. I at least thought I was getting a viable warantee, as did you.

At what store was this occur?

I'd try to get some sympathy at another store. If that doesn't work, then I'd prepare for trench warefare and start working my way up the COC.

Get in touch with the NY Better Business Bureau! Once I got them involved with a problem I had with Macy's (they were telling me my GC was expired) and suddenly Macy's agreed to put the remaining balance back on my GC.
