Was at Freehold NJ last night. All they had was salesweinies spreading fertilizer.
Told me that even if they had any, they'd have to return them to Apple. Selling at

"unauthorized discounts could cause a store to lose thier Apple francise".

But at least I scored some good buys on 80GB drives at Staples on the way!

Yeah, I got a Mac one too. It takes maybe 2 minutes to convert to PC. The link was posted somewhere in this thread. When my ssiter was negotiating the price, the guy said $100 for 5Gb and $150 for the 10GB. He said the 5GB were a little better quality since the 10s were pretty banged up (or so he said). When my sister went to pay for it, it rang up $70, and $30 for the 2 year Service Plan. Everything works fine excpet one of the earbuds doesn't work too well, but thats easily replaceable.

Take a look at the warranty though. I can't speak for yours, but mine is a 2 Year Carry-In Replacement which I'm sure (and hoping) means I bring the broken Ipod to CompUSA and they replace it on the spot. Even $150 is good for a 5GB Ipod and 2 year warranty. New ones are $300 and come with Apples 90 day warranty...

Actually, crapusa warantees are pretty good. I had a 4 year old P3 433 mhz laptop that they couldn't fix, and they replaced it with a 1.2 Ghz P3 laptop. That would never happen at best crap.

FYI--

I consulted the NY State website and you cannot back out of the extended warranty contract. Check with your own state, YMMV.

Yeah, same with me. I'm not going to the store it was purchased from so I hope it goes well. I have a receipt and a box so I don't think they will give me a lot of sh-t but I'm expecting something since it says on the receipt "Ipod, $69.88"...

Went in and was told they had no more 5 gb's but plenty of 10 and 20gb. So I asked for a 10 gb one (they had mac and pc) and it looked beat up, but as I only wanted the hd, hey who cares. It came up at the original price. I was like hey, it's an open box, try again man. So dude went to manager and came back with a price of $269. Hmmmm no thanks. He gave me the story of it coming with the replacement warranty and being able to get a new one if it breaks. Still no go for me. I saw someone else there trying to get it (was that you coreynyc, it was around 5:30 or so) and him complaining about there being no remote included. So I decided to wait to see if he would get a lower price. He told me they qouted him the same $269 price. So they called the mac representative to verify if it was supposed to come with a remote. I waited for a couple more minutes (almost 20) and called it a night. Good luck to that guy. I don't see them lowering it more than a couple more bucks. Damn NY stores always overcharging us, while stores in other cities always give the good deals. Had the price been $150 like in Chicago, or even $200 I would have gotten ($220 perhaps as well). But since I wanted only the HD, no dice. Sorry to all those who wanted one who I said I would get. As they had no more 5gb ones, I couldn't afford to put 2 or even one on the good ole' CC.

Thanks for the deal posting, buddy. That was me you saw in CrapUSA. I ended up with a 10GB for $269, with the 2-year TAP. If she don't work, I go and gets me a new one.

Askani--
Probably was me, if you were there around 6:30. I was dealing with the fat guy in the denim shirt (must mean he's a manager), was that you who ask him where the MP3 players were?

Anyway, they were only willing to sell at "cost" because they were complete packages with everything that is supposed to come with it. I said to them my "friend" paid about $100 for the 5GB at 5th Ave and they said it didn't have earphones, drivers, etc. For the 20GB, they wanted a little over $430. I can get a brand new one today from Dell for for $450 & no sales tax. Let some sucker take it off their hands.

FYI--The 2 yr warranty was offered to me for $29. I can't believe that other stores are jacking the price up.

For those of you who jumped in mid-thread, I'm referring to the 57th & 8th store in Manhattan.

I'm telling you, send a women in to pick one up. My sister said there were two guys helping her, and they were opening up each box trying to find a minimally-scratched one...

ErikaeanLogic, it's good to finally put a face to a fellow AT member and a Golden Member at that (I figured you were someone from the forum). I guess $269 is a good deal, especially if you can get a new one from it. For me it wasn't since I just wanted the HD. UltraWide, I wish the HD where that easy to get. Here is a snippet from an article at Tom's Hardware talking about the iPod and the HD, "Currently, Toshiba offers this drive in 5GB, 10GB, and 20GB sizes, which mirrors the same capacity sizes in which Apple offers the iPod. From what we have been told, the drive in the Windows version of the iPod is formatted using FAT32, so it might be possible to replace or clone the original iPod hard drive and replace it with a larger one. We found that these drives are difficult to get your hands on, and if you can, they are expensive, costing as much as a new iPod." Thats why I made two trips in an attempt to get the 10gb version for $150 which was the advertised price in Chicago. Oh well guess I will get the 5gb one from TigerDirect for $150. My iPaq 5450 will make good use of it.

FYI, a friend of mine got there at 4:40pm and got the 10gb version for $205. Hmmmm, I'm gonna try to go with him tomorrow with his receipt and see if I can get the same price.

So I guess the Toshiba Mobilphile is essentially an iPod...

Am I missing some features in the MusicMatch Jukebox for the iPods? People are always raving about how great the software for the iPod is, but so far, my experience has been that MusicMatch pretty much blows.

To clarify: I'm not using it to create MP3s, organize them, or play them on my desktop. I've already got software I like for that. I've only tried using it to copy music onto the iPod. I've download the trial of XPlay and after using it, I'm about to uninstall MusicMatch (especially because of the annoying autostart function when I plug the iPod in).

What software are people using to manage their audio on their new (if slightly scratched) iPods?

...sorry if I'm drifting the topic here.

I went back to 57/B-way to pick up another one for my brothers birthday. I saw another Anandtecher there trying to get a good price on a 10 gig ipod. I think he said they were offering it to him for 269 with warrante. I inquired about the difference between the $29 extended warr and the one I got for $59, and they showed me the documentation. Aparently, for $29, they simply extend the manufactures warr, but the one for $59 is a replacement warr. You bring it to them in non-working condition and they replace it. At least that's what they said.

I wish I knew that the Apple IEEE/firewire plug was different than the windows pc firewire plug. I'll have to get some kind of adaptor to hook the ipod to my Sony VAIO.

Thanks again to all the posters for this deal!
