No love for Etymotic? I use ER6i in ear monitors and think they're great.

 My recommendation if your music listening tastes aren't bass heavy.

The ER6i's have a nicer/fuller mids and highs - a little bright - but overall better quality sound than the E2Cs.

Oh, and I have them paired with my Creative Zen Vision:M, they sound great with the adj. EQ

Yeah, I would pick those of the 2's, but the 3 or 4's are better than the ety's of equal price, IMO.

sound quality enough a priority to you that you're willing to spend $200 for earphones, but you're content to use an iTrip in your car?

no kidding.

I had this same question about a month ago. I went to head-fi.org and found my answer.

I demoed the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro's and they blew away the Shure 2 and 3's by far!

headphonesolutions.com had them for $159 AR last month. So I got a sweet deal on a sweet pair of earphones. You may want to give them a call to see if they can do $159. You will NOT be sorry they are awesome!

At home while I play games - with earphones

While my g/f is shopping at the mall - with earphones and it cranked as loud as possible so I don't have to give opinions on clothes
At work - plugged into my laptop - with my headphones plugged in

I use my good headphones primarily for recording music and playing games on computer. I don't like to hook them up to my iPod for some reason. So I just want earphones for that.

..(serious) careful about extended use at high volumes, lot of ear problems are cropping up for people (correlated with increased headphone/personal music player use). Just watchin out.

edit: and I'm happy with my e2cs.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered the E4C's for $179.

Regarding sound quality in car..I'm only in it for about 15 minutes on way to work and 15 minutes on the way home. I don't spend enough time with it to go above the iTrip quality.

Regarding ear problems - I already have hearing issues from being a musician, so I'm pretty careful with that.

I've tried the E3C (They were $170 at the Apple store, but didn't give me the bass I wanted for the type of music I listened to.

Then I got the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 PROs (from EBay) because I heard that they blew the Shure's away. Man were those people right. I do plan to get the customized UE-5c which comes at half a grand (which is ok because I have the ears that can hear the difference and I'm thinking of going back into the music scene).

By the way, there's a difference between earbuds and IEMs. Shure doesn't make earbuds (if I recall). They are two different kind of devices and I defately stay away from buds like the plague, they hurt after a minute.

Go with the e2s, you're not going to appreciate the difference in anything higher end on a portable player, especially not if, like most people, it's loaded up with 128kbps music.

dont' get the UE5cs, get the UE10cs, which will blow you away... I've heard much disappointment with the UE5s
