I'm thinkin about getting and iPod and am pretty set on getting an iPod mini. I want a mini because I will be able to use an "AirPlay" transmitter which works very nicely. My dad has one and it works great.

I would get a nano but they dont support many of ipods accessories so...

At this point in time how much would you think a reasonable price to spend on an iPod mini would be?

New & Used?

I can get refurbished ones off the official apple website along with 3 year warranty which would be 150$+warranty

Thanks

They stopped making mini's when the nano was released, so more than likely you'll only find used ones. But i wouldn't even bother, get a nano... the battery life on the nano is far better than the mini.

Thanks for the advise. I would like to use a FM transmitter and I know of one that works well with the mini and none that work well with the nano. So that is my main reason for wanting a mini.

Has anyone had experience with both the nano and the iPod Mini(2nd gen)? What price would you put on a used-well taken care of ipod mini?

I know that griffin I believe makes fm transmitters for the nano now and I've always been rather happy with their products.

The SanDisk Sansa looks pretty nice, I'll have to look more into that... good reviews at amazon so far.

The Sansa is a very nice player. Be aware, the firmware does have some niggling bugs though, such as playing album tracks out of order (may have been fixed, i gave the unit to my gf) and some minor tagging issues as well.

Aso for a very in depth review, anythingbutipod gave a review on the unit.

I own both, and I perfer the Nano any day.

I have an iTrip made by Griffin for my iPod, here is a link

It works better than the one I had for my mini. Nano's battery life is AMAZING!

What accessorie will not work with a nano?

I have a 2nd Gen mini 6GB. It's awesome. Sound quality is good, and the battery lasts about 16 hours. The battery life beats my sisters nano, by a few hours.

Wont most accessories that work with a mini also work with a nano? Personally, I would prefer a nano, just because they're so much smaller than the mini. Plus, they come in black.

Not sure what I would pay. Probably around 1/2 of what i got it for, so probably <AU$200/US$150 (for a 6GB).

the original air play will not work with the nano... They did however make another version and it hasn't had very good reviews.

I was thinking the nano would be very easy to break. Like having a stick of gum in ur pocket or under something. SNAP

Wierd.... my mini's battery never lasted more then 8 hours... it was first gen though... what a piece of junk... my brother has it over in Iraq right now... getting arround 30 mins of battery life from full charge nowadays... completely useless MP3 player, we are sending him a creative Zen... then im ripping the microdrive out and chucking the shell in the trash... I don't even care if I can't format the beast.... I hate the %$(#ing thing so much.

In conclusion I'd like to say NOT to buy a mini, buy a nano or another brand.

you can get a battery pack addon

maybe it got the f*ck baked out of it in iraq lion batteries don't like heat i think

anyways, u know any lithium ion battery has a shelf life right? only lasts a few years and certain number of charges. i think it just was used to death if it was first gen, that happens to all devices. replacement battery costs maybe 30 bucks online with installation tools+vcd instruction

I have a 2nd gen mini too, the 4gb one... and mine doesn't last ANYWHERE near 16 hrs. I would say 10 hrs maxed... i haven't timed it personally, but i know for a fact that it wouldn't last anywhere near 16hrs (i've had the mini died on me about a dozen times now, and each time i would estimate it was more in the 7-8 hrs range).

I know I hadn't even used it in a while because it was so bad, but he didnt have one before he left, he asked I gave it to him, was just sitting on my computer being a big USB stick anyways lol. It was a piece of junk through the entire ownership experience. I am sure it got messed up once it got over there in the heat as well, and bad voltage.(The new one will only charge off his laptop, doesnt accept the ac adapter)

The worst part about the mini is the standby time, its absolutly terrible, I couldn't just leave it in my backpack and use it for a few minutes between classes, because its battery was already dead.

BTW my previous MP3 Player was a MuVo NX 512MB, sure it didn't have the same interface , options, or space, but I think it was far better. I believe it lasted about 10-12 hours on 1 AAA battery, had a really nice click wheel interface, and mounted as a USB drive, didnt require any specially formatted files, could play .Wavs, had a nice microphone, and let you record notes. It was nearly as small as the iPod stick thing and had a display. It was plauged with a bit of poor build quality that eventually caused it death after 2 years, mine died because the USB port broke, others died from the headphone jack being loose. However it was much more usable, and much better then my iPod. The newer generations of the MuVo are now pretty much fixed of their orginal problems, perhaps I will get another. I was probably spoiled with battery life from my frist player, the ability to drop files, and not having to transcode mp3s.

ML_iPod and winamp got me through my iPod experience Id like the thank the authors of both

Sorry for hijacking the thread and ranting

Seemed to be design flaws not problems with the unit, iPods just tend to have terrible battery lives, I don't think they live up their OVERLY optimistic battery lives. I will admit that every company is overly optimistic about how long the battery can really last, but Apple take it to another level, its almost outright lying.

Standardized battery rundown tests have shown that iPod batteries actually last longer than claimed.

Show me these tests, I stick by my statement.
BTW you have to take the user into account, which means skipping etc... I bet with real world usage vs. competition they do much worse.

www.ilounge.com

Thats hilarious, i have that site open as one of my home tabs in firefox, love it, and i love the mini i have, i want another, and ive always had decent battery life on it, my wife would use it to go work out at the gym for 1- 2 hours a day 3 days a week, then id use it to play drums to for an hour a day, we wouldnt have to charge it for at least a week. So even at jsut an hour a day for my wife, and an hour a day for me, thats 8 - 10 hours of straight usage in a gym, and on a drummers belt, if thats not real world usage i dunno what is, and thats jsut before we decided to charge it, i remember several days when the batt i con was blinking like it was aboutt to die but it kept going for like 2 more hours, then i plugged it in simply because it said it was low, not because it died. I think it depends on the unit you get, some batts just die faster?

My mini runs around 14-16 hours. It's 2nd gen. Go for it. I think the mini size is perfect. The nano seems so small and fragile.

i thought fm transmitters needed nothing more than a headphone jack? im pretty sure it works on everyone that has a 3.5mm mini-jack.
