Ipod/mp3 player/Napster question

I was going to buy an ipod when my friend told me that you cant put the music you have on your ipod. He said that you HAVE to use apple's service to download songs, and then put it on your ipod. He also said that there is a code you hve to enter in your ipod to do somethign with it? I dont know exactly. But he basicaly said that i cant put the mp3s i have on my computer on it. After going to napster.com i cant find ipod under the supported player. Not only that, i herd of this thing called iTunes (i assume its the service that you HAVE to use to put music on your ipod). So can anyone confirm or not confirm this?

Also, napster's 15/month service, does it only somehow let you put it on your mp3 player or does it download it in mp3 format? otherwise i'd subscribe to one moth of Napster and download a life time worth of music.

You can put whatever mp3s you want into it. You can use either iTunes which Apple provides, or a variety of other software...

edit - The Napster deal has a catch. The mp3s are licensed for 30 days and then no longer play on your iPod. As long as you are subscribed to Napster then they will play, just gotta plug in the player and "prove" you are still subscribed and it will renew your mp3 licenses, I THINK

If you read the news, there are people who have found ways to go around the Napster limitations, so you basically get unlimited downloads during your trial period. I can't say more, but it was mentioned on slashdot.org a couple of weeks back and I'm sure it's all over the net.

I believe that Napster uses copyright protected .WMA (Windows Media) files, and the iPod doesn't support .WMA's. Yes, you can convert WMA's to MP3's and play them on your iPod that way, but I'd be amazed if the copyright protection that Napster is using would allow that to happen easily.

So, yeah, the only practical way to download legally purchased music files for an iPod is to use iTunes. Most if not all of the other music download sites use Windows Media formatted music files.

For Napster's music rental plan you need a player (not iPod) that supports copy-protected WMA files. See Napster.com for details.

Of course... if you consider allofmp3.com to be legal.. that would work too. I still havn't seen proof that what they do is illegal or legal.

mp3 and acc for lossy, and apple lossless for lossless.
