Are any of you going to be getting the Touch to use as a PDA?

Just interested in everyone's thoughts about using it this way. I assume someone will make a note taking program for it?

I am also hoping apple opens it up for other developers.

Anyone care to share their feelings on the idea of using the Touch this way?

I think it would be quite cool as a PDA, though I would be more interested in any PDA apps that people come up with being ported to the iPhone as well, so it will become a more complete smartphone.

I am planning on either getting some iPod Touches or iPhones to use as Smart Home controllers. Aside from being locked down and having to hack them to use your own apps, they are pretty great little devices.

I am hoping that there would be some kind of text editing for the ipod Touch so that it could be used as a PDA also.

just read on engadget that you cant add entries to the calendar on the Touch. That is pretty much the last convincing I need not to buy it. I will at least wait a few months and see what software comes out for it. Without the ability to add events to the calendar it doesnt make much of a PDA.

Yeah, that's kind of dumb. They should have made the iPod Touch the same as the iPhone minus the EDGE features - no Phone or SMS, especially since they're only charging $100 less than the iPhone itself.

I was going to order one for release day, but i am going to wait for sure with that news. I would buy it as a PDA and a way to keep tabs on the Monday Night Football score when I'm in my evening grad class

not sure it will do much as a PDA. If i can't take notes or ADD calendar events it is pretty useless.

Well, if the hackers go to town on it like they have on the iPhone, then I think it will be a very capable device. Wifi, large touch screen, web browser, lots of storage... give it a nice office suite (somehow) and an email client, and we will be golden.

But i won't be getting one on release day anymore (as I'd originally planned)

The one thing that is holding me back is that it doesn't have the google maps app like the iphone...

does that really matter though? can i just go to maps.google.com? what did the app even do on the iphone?

i always wondered that about the youtube app too. I would just as soon go to the website as i would use their silly apps to do it.

the specific apps, as i understand them, give you a cleaner, more direct interface, at least for gMaps

i guess if all else fails you can just use Google's online programs, like notes, calendar and documents etc. (although i remember google docs didn't work with the safari browser about 8 months ago, don't know if they have it working yet)

Google Docs works in Safari... and yes, that would be a word processor, but it would be nice to have an offline one.
