iPod vs. Zune

The Zune seems half-baked. Definitely a rush job. I'm excited to see what MS can bring to the table in the future though.

That said, I'm no fan of the iPod or iTunes, either.

HD based media players do not interest me. they are too big. for my purposes, it cannot be any larger or heavier than the nano.

for this reason, my opinion means sh!t and i probably should not have wasted my time with this post. but i did. oh well, at least i only spent 30 seconds.

Using Marketplace points is interesting. Could be an indication of the direction they wish go with the 360. Purchase the music on the 360, download it on the Zune.

What i need on them is loads of space, use as an external HDD, and fm radio. Not to mention no annoying copy protection.
The Zune is out because of the stupid copy protection, untill someone hacks it so you can use it as an external HDD.
The iPod doesn't have fm radio, but it's been hacked so you can use it as an external HDD.

I like the fact that the zune has a bigger screen (albiet same rez). I also like the prospects that microsoft will literally throw away money to develop a competent and pleasing player. They are in it for the long haul now.

Until i Hold a zune in my hand, i'm going to reserve judgement. But Full screen touch Video IPOD will be tough to beat (when/if it comes out)

It'll be interesting. Even some of my hardcore Mac buddies have said they hate the fact that it's increasingly passe now to have an Ipod (when ironically they've been wanting more attention for Mac stuff for the better part of 10 years now.) They'll still keep buying them no doubt because Jobs could sell them chocolate-covered turds for $350 and they'd snatch them up just because it's an Apple product. But I sometimes wonder if they're any indication of maybe a future "cooling" on the Ipod's coolness factor as they become so mainstream.

I still think all the cell phones starting to usurp more Ipod-like functionality is the greatest threat to the iPod. The biggest hurdle they'll face won't be hardware, but which services they can integrate with. Apple has done a great job of getting so many people leveraged into Itunes that it's hard to get out. That's what Microsoft wants as well, which is no doubt why they're dropping Play-for-Sure.

I think initially ipod will be better but I will say from day 1 wmp11zune will be better than itunes. Its not even a close battle for me between wmp11 beta2 vs itunes 7. the only reason I keep itunes installed on my pc is to make sure my podcast works with itunes (and its podcast management suite is better) but i still play all my podcasts in wmp11 (just use itunes to download them into my watched folder). Ive heard podcast support will be coming for the final version of wmp11 and at that time itunes is being removed permenantly.

I forsee ms doing what they did with the xbox in the dap arena. Initially they will lose a ton of $$$ to get the services started and not make a ton of progress but get their name out there and start to compete and with the second generation take a pretty good share of the market and build from there. MS has done wonders in the gaming market and they really have only been around for 5 years. They have made amazing progress in 5 yrs and I see similar things with itunes/ipod.

That's just pure iPod hate without actually considering what the iPod can do as an MP3 player. I realize now that the iPod is still a good choice, because it's smaller and lighter than other competing players, and cheaper (80gb for $350, score!).

Don't get me wrong, I used to be an iPod-hater, but that was when there were choices much better than the iPod.
