iPod won't stay mounted...HELP!

This problem is quite the noodle-scratcher. Let's see if anyone here can help me.

The bottom line is, my iPod won't stay mounted as a drive. Whenever I insert it, windows reads it as a drive. But whenever I launch the iPod manager or load it into ephPod, it unmounts itself (i.e, it pops up with 'OK to disconnect'. I can leave it plugged in and it will stay mounted, but the moment anything tries to access the iPod, it unmounts itself.

I have tried two different 1394 adapters. A cheap one, and then an Adaptec FireConnect 2 (WHQL-certified). Both have the exact same results. However, this does not occur on a different computer with either 1394 card.

Therefore, it is something in Windows or specific to my system configuration.

Anyone got a clue?

Which version of the ipod do you have??

I had a similiar problem, but it turned out to be a broken firewire port on the ipod, so I had to re-soder the connector inside the ipod.

It's a iPod v2, 10 GB.

I'd suspect something like that, but it works on another computer (my work one).

you don't have any other removable media to test do you?

I have USB Keychain, 1 GB, that works fine. Mounts and unmounts correctly.

my problem was that I didnt have "Use Ipod as firewire disk" checked in the musicmatch options thing. (this is what I did when I switched to ephpod). Once I did that and uninstalled the ipod for windows thing (dunno if i should've done that but i havent had any problems since) everything worked like a dream.

Try a different cable? That sometimes solves my problems.

I'll definitely try that when I go home. That sounds like a likely culprit.

That would be a valid assumption except that on my work computer the iPod works flawlessly. Same cord, same firewire card(s), same iPod.

I too had the same problem as the poster and found out like Utterman that the firewire port broke off from the motherboard of the Ipod. It is a pretty bad design. I am glad that they have changed it with the 3rd generations.
