I'm a newb to Ipods and am considering getting the 60GB Video Ipod but have a few questions.

1. I have a large collection of mp3's, can i juts copy normal mp3's to the IPOD and play them or do I have to purchase all music for the ipod from the itunes store? OR Is it possible to convert mp3's to the ipod format (whatever that may be?)

1. I have a TiVo and a lot of tv shows in .mpg and divx format. Is there a converter or something so that I can transfer these to the IPOD and play them?

Basically.. I want the portability and the video capability of the IPOD , but i'd rather buy my music and videos in the form of CD's and DVD's..

it plays your mp3s. just toss them in itunes. hell u can do this even before u get the ipod

If you use itunes you can merely import all your mp3's. I suggest asking around and getting a much better program. I use Ephpod with my 60gb NON-video ipod. Itunes refused to transfer 1500 of my mp3's...

Also, as far as I know, movies must be in Apple's format...Quicktime. But don't hold me to that.

The ipod can play mp3 and you can convert your cd's or virtually any music you have to play on it.
No you don't have to buy from the Apple store.
Video is H264 or mpeg4. Your files have to be converted as they do in most small devices.

BTW, I use a SMT5600 smartphone from Cingular and can play mp3 in stereo thru a BT stereo headset or plugin, watch video including mpg and other popular formats as well as full dvd movies.
All in a windows phone with the screen size being almost the same as the video ipod. Ipod is 2.5" and 5600 being 2.2" I have a 1 gig minisd card so it won't hold near the 60 gig but is enough.
They are free with a new Cingular contract right now.

Tivo is announcing future TivoToGo support for the iPod Video and PSP. So the Tivo will be covered eventually. There will be a software purchase involved.

Thanks for all the great info! As for Tivo2go.. its a good program in that it gets my shows off of my TiVo.. however it takes AGES for it to download them. I just set it to download shows and then go to sleep... if I'm lucky by the time I wake up they're on my computer.

Yes, you can use all of your standard MP3s with it. EphPod and other 3rd party programs are alright, but if you're just looking to import your songs and such then you could just use iTunes.
