i think i've made up my mind on which mp3 player to get. With all the choices out there, there seems to be only one good choice. Leave it to apple of all companies to make the product i am most interested in. right now i am just looking for a little input from anyone that owns an ipod, knows a friend with one, or has just played around with one for a while. i am going to test them out tomorrow to see how good they really are, but any opinions are welcome. thanks!

Ipods on pricewatch are listed @ around 400.00.. is that an error?

Archos' cost about half of that..

no thats not an error ... when have you ever seen a cheap apple product... guess you pay for the looks though. To be honest, if i were to buy an mp3 player it would be the ipod... its just too sexy

There are several reasons why the iPod is more expensive.

1. Its made by Apple, everything they make is more expensive.
2. It uses a 1.8 inch hard drive that is made only by Toshiba, where as the Archos can use the cheapest available 2.5 incher.
3. It is smaller than every other HD based player.

The only real caveat about the iPod is its lack of a resume feature.

Please tell me you have a mac to hook it into!? I cant imagine having to use the iPod with a peecee....

Seriously though, it really is a no brainer. Other MP3 players may be cheap, but I LOVE the dial on the iPod, and that fact that it slips right in your pocket, no oddities. I just wish the screen was backlit (and maybe in color).

The iPod is a piece of cake to use with a PC - just get XPod or Ephpod software. Also, the screen has a white backlight.

You're kidding...the screen on a $400 Apple doodad ISN'T backlit?!?! Unreal. Well, it doesn't surprise me too much I guess, but still.

The iPod does have a back light. You just hold the menu button down for a couple of seconds.

just a quick update...

So i bought my 10gb iPod and it is one nice mp3 player. If you are looking for an mp3 player and price isnt really an issue, this is the only way to go. Great sound and great features. It does have a backlight and seems to have a resume feature as well. The only thing that sucks about it is musicmatch. Musicmatch is a POS. I want my mp3s to sort by path and file name, just like winamp does. The reason behind this is so that my mp3s all go in the correct order they are on the album. Musicmatch likes to take an album then put songs in alphabetical order only. In turn it puts them on the iPod that way...kinda pisses me off.

****If anyone knows of a program or a way to make a playlist for musicmatch that has all your files sorted by path then filename, PLEASE let me know (winamp playlists dont work in musicmatch!!!! ****

Other then that its everything its cracked up to be.

Typically I am totally anti-Apple, BUT I got to play with an Ipod hooked up to the new Bose Quietcomfort headphones and fell in love with both products. The IPod is actually really neat, even better than the Nomad Jukebox which I have been acustomed to. But by far the biggest thing I like were those Bose headphones. I know they are very expensive at $300, but trust me, every dollar is worth it. I would probably pay $400 for them because the sound is so incredible. Imagine a full home theater but on your ears. They are very comfortable and are simply undeniably the best headphones ever. Even better than the Seinsheimers that I have.

The iPod is a great product. I recently purchased the 20 gig model and love it. My only complaint would be the earphones, but I can live with the stock ones for a little while longer.

Bought the 5gig and love it. Great sound, style, size, screen. Only bad part is the headphones, hurt your ears after a while, but decent bass for ear buds.
