I haven't bought a monitor in several years and need a 23" for general use and an IP camera system I'm building. No gaming. I've had good luck with Asus LED's and the price is right.

Then I saw the IPS monitors mentioned and noticed the price is not that expensive. Would these be of any great value to me??

thanks for your opinion.

Do you have a link to the displays you're considering? You're asking a question that doesn't really make sense - IPS is a panel technology used by many different manufacturers. Asus is a brand that sells lots of different monitors, some of which are almost certainly IPS. An 'LED monitor' is used colloquially to refer to LED backlit LCDs, but does not determine the panel type. An LED LCD could be IPS, TN, MVA, or any other variety.

In general yes IPS is worthwhile, particularly if you are not gaming and do not need ultra high response times. The price premium is not nearly what it used to be either, so it's a much smaller cost to justify.

I personally haven't had a non IPS display in years.

I would suggest that you define your requirements and budget then conduct a search within those parameters at the retailer of your choice. Personally I like VA and IPS panels for the picture quality and have run both for several years.

Let me clarify. I'm aware of Asus as a brand as I have had 3 of their monitors that performed well, so I tend to gravitate towards using them again based on my humble needs. I don't have a budget and the use will be for internet, and general MS Office applications. Nothing fancy.

I'm also aware of the different LCD panels, so my questions is are the IPS panels that much of an advantage over the other types, and is it worth spending the extra dollars based on my needs.

Here is an example of the monitor I was originally considering:

Newegg does not specify the type of panel on most Asus monitors, other than the IPS panel models.

Right now cheap ips panels are becoming more popular than ever thanks to samsung redefining the market with their pls iteration of it which forced prices down to their current levels. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an ips panel for the demonstrable improvement in picture quality versus tn. The panel you list is TN, as are all VH panels, and not ips which you can tell by the viewing angle and going elsewhere for specs because newegg doesn't list them on its site. You should look at http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VS239H-P...qid=1436709966&sr=1-1&keywords=23+ips+monitor which is IPS.

That monitor looks like it may fit my needs quite well. I'm really having a hard time determining the types of panels being used even when looking at Asus' website.

After having an Acer brand monitor die after about 2 years use I said I would not buy another one, but here is IPS monitor a little less in price than the Asus that looks interesting:

keep in mind that the ultra cheap monitors have to cut costs somewhere. they'll either use a lower grade panel than the more premium (not always dictated by price) monitors or have to cut costs in supporting hardware (power supply, connectivity options, extraneous functionality, physical build quality)
