Currently I have a 5 years old 21.5 inch Viewsonic led 1080p monitor I been using for a while. It still works great, but then recently I saw bestbuy have an Acer 23 inch 1080p ips monitor. Not sure if this upgrade worth it or not. I mainly use my PC for light gaming.

Or would it be better if I wait until 4k monitor become more mainstream along with Nividia/AMD next gen video card before consider upgrading my monitor?

Thanks

Nope, not worth it paying for same resolution when you could save for a real upgrade. You could get 2K monitor before 4K becomes mainstream

I would doubtless appreciate a higher resolution, but I would really think twice about increased GPU requirements in games before doing so.

An increase in size and color accuracy is arguably worth it, especially if you can recoup part of that by selling your old one (or otherwise putting it to use).

Why Best Buy, though? You can get a similar panel for $70 less on Newegg or a much larger 27" screen for just $10 more. You'll probably get a lot of naysayers screaming "but pixel density!", but IMO a 1080 screen that's 27" is objectively superior to a 1080p screen that is smaller.

I think you would know if IPS was worth it. If you don't have an IPS TV then you clearly don't do enough in entertainment to warrant the purchase. Also your "considering" the cost of a 23" acer which probably cost close to $100, or waiting on a 4k in which you will spend at least 5x that. I think you need to head to best buy and do some comparison shopping.

I think its one of those "ignorance is bliss" things. If you don't use IPS monitors in other parts of your life, you really don't know what you are missing.

I ended up getting my IPS monitors because I had some at work, and going home to my TN panels was noticeable to me.

If you think your TN panel is fine, I would stick with that and save money for something else.

I upgraded to a 1440p ips/ pls panel and for me it was worth every penny.

1080p looks pixelated compared to 1440p and 4k but a 1080p TN to IPS/PLS would be a sidegrade not an upgrade.

What is your normal budget for upgrades in any given year? Is there something else you could spend the money on?

I am very happy with IPS panels, if you are a light gamer then I recommend it - the better visual quality (in my opinion) would serve you well not just in games, but across the board.

Can you support two monitors? You could keep the original as extra screen real estate.

That right there. Until I bought one I did not realize how much of a difference
it was. Now that I have enjoyed one, I will never buy another TN panel.

People should stop buying 1080p, 16:9 format PC monitors. Stop buying into the "Full HD" bull that they are spouting. 1920x1440 is better than 1920x1080 people...it's MORE than full HD. Or 1920x1200.

1920x1080 screens have come down in price so much though, probably because they often share panels with TVs. Although I prefer taller aspect ratios, it's often not worth the premium.

Compared to a 5 year old 21.5" monitor? Yes buy that one in a heartbeat. It's not the best for $139, but it is way better than what you got. It will be a long time before you're able to get anything significantly better for under $150. I would also look at a 27" or 32" tv. But you wont find a good one for that price for another couple years though.

I have Asus PA238Q 23-Inch Professional Super-IPS Full-HD LED Monitor and I LOVE it to death.

Good for watching movies and internet surfing. Not the best for graphics work but good enough.

For that price, I doubt you will find anything better for that price.
