IPS vs 120hz monitor

I know many people prefer IPS (eIPS, H-IPS, etc) due to its good viewing angles and wide color gamut. however a few 120hz monitors have been released.
which would be better for gaming? which would be better for watching videos?

I think that comparing a monitor with an IPS panel to another monitor that has a 120 Hz option is a bit like comparing apples to oranges (there's probably a better analogy, but oh well). You need to think about what your priorities are (what will you be using the monitor for, what is your budget, is color accuracy important, etc.) and what different monitors as a whole have to offer. A TN panel w/ a 120 Hz option is still going to have the drawbacks of a TN panel.

If it is the 2233rz you are interested in, Xbit Labs has a review here:

erm.. sorry for the confusion. i didnt see it in person. i guess i should have said from the review i read, it uses a TN panel.

TN will get you faster response time, but sacrificing color reproduction. ips is slower response time but the best at color reproduction. it all depends on what you put more value on.

What's with these 120hz displays anyways? Who needs? I'd rather have 60hz and triple buffer running than 120 and jumping between 60 and 90.

120mhz = better for gaming (assuming your GPU solution is pushing more than 60fps).

IPS = better for pretty much anything else.

Nice - this confirms what I was saying in the other two threads. I?ve been saying for years that 60 Hz is a handicap for LCDs, and now we have apples vs apples proof.

This is a real 120 Hz LCD that can be set to 120 Hz in Windows, just like a CRT can. Furthermore RTC errors were reduced four-fold over 60 Hz, and benefits were even observed on the Windows desktop with the mouse pointer and window dragging.

Now all we need is to get past the prehistoric resolution of 1650x1080.

120hz is needed for NVidia's 3D glasses approach.

LOL. It only took us about 5 years to get LCD tech up to where CRTs where in terms of resolution; and I would still argue many of these LCDs are not that affordable.

120hz also does improve video viewing when the player supports it correctly. The 1080p24 source can be displayed a lot smoother (action moving across the screen, etc) on the 120hz displays compared to the 60hz displays... Major video formats now all go into 120hz evenly for more consistent viewing...

Anyway, it's all about priorities still... Gaming/smooth response, 120hz... Color range and accuracy, IPS, etc...

thanks for the answers guys. i think right now smooth response is my priorities over color range. guess 120hz for me.. yet i want one with hdmi or display port damnit. can't wait for more 22-24" 120hz monitors to come out

I am just wondering...has anyone compared the Viewsonic to the Samsung 120Hz monitors? I am interested in one of the two for 3D Stereo use but I am not sure which of the two to go with. I noticed that Asus is working on one also but I could not find any information on it (specifically what ports it will include). The problem with the Asus model is that I would likely have to wait a long time for it to launch. Not sure which to go with.

Oh good call.

Lol where did you hear this; ever heard of 3:2 pulldown? Works fine.

3:2 pulldown is a solution, but not a very good one, since it involves interlacing material to fill out 30 frames. Depending on who you talk to, this is either an improvement over duplicating frames (if you can perceive the difference in motion) or a decrease in quality (if you can perceive the interlacing artifacts) - I'm in the latter camp myself. In either case, frame duplication when you can duplicate all the frames evenly is the best way to go, since it has neither the pitfalls of uneven duplication for 60hz displays or interlacing.

Sure, as far as interpolation goes, given 24 FPS won't fit into 60 Hz.

Of course 120 Hz doesn?t even need pulldown because 24 FPS divides into it, so it?s much better than any pulldown.

Did you read the article? Even dragging the Windows mouse pointer improved on the 120 Hz display.

I'd rather have 60hz and triple buffer running than 120 and jumping between 60 and 90.
Why do you think a 120 Hz display would jump between 60 and 90?
