How you doin all ?

I planned to buy a tn panel for gaming but did a research and found out the edge that ips have over tn.
I do not intend to do photoshopping/ videoediting. I want to use the monitor for gaming primarily and a bit of browsing. I like the 120 hz feature and think that 2ms g2g response times are marketing gimmicks. At the same time I prioritize high color quality . I do not give importance to viewing angles though ...

TN or IPS ? My budget is upto $ 280

IPS is fine for gaming and browsing. IPS has better colors as well. Unless you play only FPS games you don't need a TN. $280 you can get a good deal on a Dell IPS i believe.

I switched to IPS from TN and I couldn't be happier with the color quality and I have no issues gaming with it.

I switched from a good IPS (Dell 2410) to a 120Hz TN and the reduction in motion blur is really dramatic. The spec for 2ms GtG normally means nothing but buying a good 120Hz 3D vision 2 monitor is well worth it to a gamer. That isn't to say that IPS is bad, its perfectly respectable and without a doubt the colour quality is better. But a sharp image while turning around matters more to me than I realised.

Love my u2412m,my first ips and apparently it isn't true ips,no matter if it is or not personally the $300 i paid for it was well worth it.

Beautiful picture, awesome colors and a incredibly durable stand that does not wobble and the viewing angles makes it the perfect media monitor as well and the anti glare comes in handy more then you think,no complaints at all here.

Ips for life here,i am hoping the 27'' u2712m can get into my affordability range soon, might be a couple years but i hear these dells are so tough you will be upgrading simply out of pure boredom before they even fail.

This is pretty much how I feel as well. I also found that it helped reduce/remove nausea I used to get in 1st person games due to lowered latency. Unfortunately I still experience nausea if I play more than 30-60mins in 3D, which I found out I like a lot.

for overall daily use, you will appreciate a quality IPS much more so than a TN thats only good for gaming. best to try out an IPS first though. if try out a fast 120/144 TN then gaming on an IPS will be painful when panning around. and just make sure its high quality IPS screen as some of them are not so great looking.

// why not both?

dual screens rock.... pick IPS for colors... if you notice the lag, then save up and get the 120hz

A tug of war is going on in my mind

120hz vs Colors

I chose colours, then I tried 120Hz, now I choose 120Hz. Others have tried both and come to the exact opposite conclusion. Really does depend if you are a vsync off, minimal lag highest frame rate possible kind of player or 45 fps is OK for me thanks very much kind of player.

What exactly is the difference between IPS and TN? I've never been clear on that.

if you are happy with 45 fps then you are missing nearly the whole point of a 120hz screen.

That was his point. If you are happy with 45 FPS, then you should probably go with the IPS monitor, if you want high FPS and very responsive gaming, then you'll likely prefer the 120hz TN monitor.

IPS has better view angles. TN can have noticeable color shift depending on view angle and some people say that notice shift when directly in front of a TN panel.

TN has better response times

IPS used to be noticeably more expensive than TN panels, but nowadays there are several budget IPS panels out in the market that are close enough to TN prices

A lot of people don't notice the issues people have with IPS and gaming, so its not a huge deal for majority. I've tried both types and still enjoy my IPS better for fps than the 102hz i had.

IPS response time isn't a problem with vsync off. black levels on IPS screens are so fucking increddibly awful though that it makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

All i can say about my ips is how even my non tech friends say its just a bad ass screen, and usually any other screen would do for them till they get on my computer and game a bit then the comments just come out while they game about how sharp the picture is,heck have had people saying if i wanna sell it they would buy it lol.

At the OP's budget he's not able to get a gamers-level TN anyway, so I would go IPS. If budget were in the 450-650 dollar range it would be a harder call

A Benq XL2411t is about $260 (assuming you can the darn thing for sale, its very easily available in the UK but I had some trouble finding the price in the US). There is also the Asus VG248QE for ~$260 as well so these high refresh screens are within budget.

I got this 27" IPS panel for my wife a few months ago when it was on sale for $250. I couldn't be happier with it - even backlight, small footprint, good aesthetics and of course all of the benefits of an IPS panel.

Shop around a bit and you may be able to get a decent 27" within your budget.

The vg248qe currently ranked as one of the top tn panels in the market right now is within my budget...

Wow, I take it back. Didn't realise that 120hz (let alone 144hz) screens could be had for so low.

I would hate to see how the worst ranked one looks. I used it for a couple weeks and found it to be a pos other than the 144hz. I seriously think most people are oblivious and will think anything new they buy is great.

Did you use the ICC profiles? It is one of the worst out of the box, but I have heard it can be fixed with a new profile. And most people who like these use lightboost, which you never tried.

I could see the need for a 120Hz TN monitor if you are sensitive to lag/blur, but you need a video card to push the FPS so IPS is more appealing to me. I have both an older TN and my IPS next to each other, but still prefer the IPS for gaming.
