Hello, i've been wondering which monitor to purchase with a price limit of $150. I've been doing research of just about everything for monitors and now im stuck on whether to buy IPS or TN panel monitor.

I'm looking for a 1080p monitor with great colors. Im a gamer and play fast paced games where low response time is useful, but i also enjoy watching high-quality movies at 1080p blueray, so having superb color quality is essential too.

One thing i constantly hear about IPS monitors is that they have a larger viewing angle, but as for me, i'll be on my chair, where the monitor is perfectly fixed to my eyes, so viewing angle doesn't matter much to me.

I have two monitors in mind atm,

TN - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009316

IPS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236205

I'm wondering if IPS panels have greater color quality than TN when im viewing straight at the monitor, if the colors are more vibrant or sharp or if its better when watching movies at the highest quality

The "response time" that monitor companies advertise has nothing to do with input latency and almost nothing to do with ghosting, fyi. So unless you go to a third party site that specializes in comparing monitors, you really have no idea which monitor is more "responsive".

The risk with IPS is primarily ghosting, and on older models input latency. The only 2 IPS monitors that have to date been proven to be the equals of TN panels in those regards are the Dell Ultrasharps, and the Asus PA series monitors. The Asus have more backlight bleed issues than the Dell's, but they both do have some backlight bleed because of their choice to go with LED backlighting (which always presents this risk).

Personally I think that in the $150 price range you are safer to go with a TN panel (and personally I think Samsung makes better TN panel monitors than Asus for whatever that is worth), but Dell's 23" IPS ultrasharp is on sale for 199.99, so once you cross the 200 dollar mark I think that is the best option until you get to a much higher price range, unless you are specifically searching for 1920x1200+ resolutions, or a certain size, etc.

edit: on a side note, the stand that comes with that VS series IPS monitor does not look remotely stable enough for the monitor's size. That will wobble, I am fairly sure.

Ok, After looking at some Dell ultrasharp monitors, i decided to choose the u2312HM

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraShar.../dp/B005LN1JEC

I read the review at tftcentral ( http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm ) and thought it would be good for my gaming needs as the lag is low, but the 6-bit colors is kinda pausing me from buying it.

Im able to raise my budget from $150 upto $230 for that monitor.

Also reading the customer reviews on amazon, people are quite happy with it,
what are your thoughts on it? Or should i look for a good TN monitor

That monitor is actually on sale for 199.99 atm, not 229.99. There is nothing else in that price range that is superior, to put it very plainly.

Why not a VA panel?..then you get better colours then TN with better viewing angles, something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014299

I'm buying this for my next monitor http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/benq_gw2450hm.htm

What would you choose between the following 3:

1.Benq GW2450HM-better contrast,semi-glossy
2.Dell U2412HM-IPS so no problem with gamma shift, best response time, but the hard coating ruins the image quality
3.Dell S2340L-IPS,almost the same response time as U2412HM and glossy so the colours are more vibrant

For movies, games like skyrim where colours, landscapes matter.

You asked this question in another thread, and the answer is still the 2412hm. Both of the Dell's are significantly better than the BenQ, and between the 2 dells the 2412 and 2312 have the lowest input latency (which has nothing to do with measured response time; you can more or less ignore that number since it is more a marketing device than a significant feature). You can also ignore the posted contrast specifications because the way that they measure those skirts the line of blatantly lying. It's less meaningful than the response time, which itself has almost no significance in the modern market (and hasn't since back when LCD monitors had 25ms+ response times).

Why ask again? Plenty of people told you this already in your own thread.

I just wanted to hear more opinions...so I can narrow the search and maybe I can find people who have the S2340L and the U2312HM.But I think I'll choose the S2340L because it seems they are the same, only that S has glossy finish so better image quality...

VA tech has pretty serious ghosting issues unfortunately.

They have improved the overdrive performance on AMVA panel,

However, when you switch to the 'high' setting there was a noticeable difference in performance. Suddenly the moving car became much sharper and the motion blur and ghosting was reduced dramatically. Finally there seemed to be an overdrive control which worked well to improve the responsiveness of the panel! There was still some slight blur evident but it was much better than AMA off, and much better than we'd seen from other AMVA panels in the past. Turning the overdrive control up one more notch to 'premium' helped a little more. Blur was reduced again nicely and the movement was a little sharper than before. You could pick out a very small amount of overdrive overshoot on the image in the form of a dark trail behind the moving car. This was pretty minimal though and not something which should be obtrusive day to day. Overshoot is a result of an aggressive overdrive impulse which is not controlled correctly. On some models the overshoot can be severe and very obvious, but here it was not too bad. I would recommend running the GW2450HM in the 'premium' mode for gaming and fast action content.

So, what third party site would you recommend for researching?
