Iran 'to release British sailors'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the UN favoured the US and UK
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says 15 British naval personnel captured in the Gulf will be freed.

He repeated allegations that the British sailors and marines "invaded" Iranian waters, but said they would be freed as a "gift" to Britain.

Looks like no war for the neocons .

Just thought of this while bush has been sitting on his ass on vacation again:
Pelosi plays peace broker in Middle East
So Pelosi was just talking to Irans buddy Syria and now suddenly they are freed?

So much for diplomacy being useless if this is true.

It was the only sane outcome really. Gift schmift. . .whatever Ahmadinejad wants to call it to save some face. We all knew this was the only real possible way it would end. The imporant thing is they are freed.

I think everyone pretty much knew this was political BS from Iran from the start.

"How can you justify seeing a mother away from her home, her children? Why don't they respect family values in the West?"

I got a chuckle out of this. I'm sure all the woman in Iran are enjoying their rights. How did this clown Ahmadinejad ever get elected in Iran.

In all fairness, Blair had to handle it himself. How would it look if the US jumped into this matter, and took over from the U.K?

He had to let them go eventually or face British retaliation, even though it had been limited to diplomatic action to this point. Keeping them indefinitely or putting them on trial for espionage (a charge so obviously trumped up it would make Mike Nifong blush) would have forced England's hand into military action and probably requesting our help.

My opinion is that this was a setup from the get go to see just how far they could push the British, grab some headlines, and distract people from the nuclear issue. They took the sailors because prior experience told them that the UK wouldn't do anything involving force unless pushed to extremes. Intentionally kidnapping US military members currently carries a lot more risk and in the circumstances that this happened would likely constitute a casus belli. Iran wasn't about to give Bush a legitimate and defensible reason to initiate hostilities.

Put simply, this couldn't have played out any other way unless Ahmadinejad really wanted an up close and personal demonstration of western weapons technology.

Now Bush gets the PR pickle- what to do with the Iranian envoys captured in Irbil...

The pressure to release them can only increase, which was probably the Iranian goal in the first place...

A little rah-rah flagwaving at home, putting Dubya's nuts in a vise on the other side of the hostage issue- doesn't look like face saving at all, to me... The Bushistas are the ones being put in the position of having to do something to save face...

Nah. Just start shootin'.

We all know it is just a prisoner exchange. 15 Brits for the Iranian captives in Iraq.

Let's hope neither side provokes another round of prisoner taking

He was manning the diabolical Neocon weather control machine (of Katrina fame) that blew the UK sailors into Iranian waters.

...or maybe they can't resist a dig against Bush no matter how disconnected he is from a given situation. I don't care for the man but you don't see me raving like a crazy person about him (like some on here) if I step in a puddle or suffer some other random misfortune.

Iran is to free the 15 sailors and Royal Marines captured in the Gulf as a "gift" to the British people to mark the Easter season.

That's this barbarian's way of saying the he is eating crow and that this publicity stunt would have not lasted much longer.

Ahmadinejad asked British Prime Minister Tony Blair not to "punish" the crew for confessing that they had been in Iranian waters when they were seized by Iranian coast guard. Iran broadcast videotapes of some of the crew giving confessions, infuriating Britain.

Hysterics indeed.

Lesson learned:
Invade immediately, otherwise talking to the iranians might not give the hoped results!

Are you saying that you believe any conflicts with Iran can be relieved via diplomacy?

Talk about being short sighted. . . or ignorant.

* their president's participation in the 1979 Hostage Crisis

* their presidents denial the holocaust ever existed

* the fact that wikipedia, youtube, among other websites and supressed media outlets

* their desire for a nuclear facility for "peaceful purposes," but their refusal to accept help in exchange to limit their development to light-water reactors in place of heavy-water reactors (which can be a way to manufacture weapons grade Uranium, light water is ostensibly not)

* the desire to crush Israel and "wipe it off the map" -- i don't care how it is translated

* the recent capturing of 15 british troops and pulling a charade

just to name a few issues... these guys seem like stand up guys who could easily be trusted to keep up their and and negotiated with......

The fact that you have been successfully brainwashed into a militant marching machine. When are you simple minded fools going to understand that your kind is responsible for the death of millions. There is no brutality on earth, no genocide, no war, no mass murder that is ever done except for the highest of noble reasons by people like yourself stuffed full of reasonable explanations as to why they must kill. You are one of the dick heads that plague our world, full of you holy zeal, truth, and lust for blood. But deep down you are a coward who hasn't the stomach to live in a world where there are monsters under your bed. What you need is not a war but a doctor.

Exaclty, but leave it up to the flaming libs at this site to blame Bush for anything and everything. This was a Blair issue first, a Euro issue second and a US issue third.
