May those clerics wind up stacked in a refrigerated morgue, just like the Shah's people during the revolution.

It's their turn.

Freedom sometimes costs blood, and I think the Iranians are ready to pay that bill finally. They were mad before, but after that little boy got killed they are in an all new dimension of rage now, I don't think they're going back. I hope Syrian Kurds come to help their brothers and sisters, show them how to make an IED. The right people get snuffed and there's no drawn out civil war. The clerics and followers will just run for it, bookworms with soft hands aren't good fighters, certainly not when terrifically outnumbered. Some RG units will need to be made examples of though.

My son's doctor is a wonderful lady from Iran. She's here with both of her parents since 2006, but has several cousins right in the thick of this. She's very worried, I asked about it and could quickly tell I shouldn't have. Tried to cheer her up, made jokes, had her teach us some Farsi vernacular, but I could tell our conversation took her someplace she didn't want to be. Learned my lesson.

Putting this here as a recommended view. Jon Stewart hosts podcast on foreign policy with Hillary Clinton and Condoleeza Rice. Really intelligent discussion by all three. I have doubts about Rice’s continued of WMD but worth a listen

to the last question - money spent by the state department is 100% our best "defense" spending. when we create allies and help partners develop strong institutions, we don't need 10 super carriers and a defense budget of the next 5+ nations combined.

From what I remember, the U.S. supported dictatorship there in order to maintain U.S. control in the region, and then tried to make deals with the Islamic gov't, then went against it when that didn't work out. Meanwhile, it was poking the Iraqis to attack, leading that country to fall apart.

There is some doubt about this. It was mentioned at an event, and nothing official has been announced.
Mr Montazeri was at a religious conference when he was asked if the morality police was being disbanded.

"The morality police had nothing to do with the judiciary and have been shut down from where they were set up," he said.

Control of the force lies with the interior ministry and not with the judiciary.

On Saturday, Mr Montazeri also told the Iranian parliament the law that requires women to wear hijabs would be looked at.

But if parts of the government are beginning to offer sweeteners to the citizens, I think it may just entrench their revolutionary mood. Iranians wants to be part of the global society.

Another report about an possibly upcoming strike with some comments made by a diplomat.

Protesters seeking to maintain their challenge to Iran’s clerical rulers have called for a three-day economic strike and a rally in Tehran’s Azadi Square on Wednesday. Similar calls for strike action and mass mobilisation have in past weeks resulted in an escalation in the unrest.

Some European diplomats believe an irreversible turning point has been reached from which Iran’s leadership will not recover.
...
“They are having a dialogue with themselves but the main population finds the offers of reform largely an irrelevance.”

The diplomat also detected tensions within the regime over how to respond to the protests, saying: “There is a lot of internal disharmony around different bits of the particular security apparatus in terms of passing responsibility for handling the protests.”

Came across this interesting twitter account since 'Iran' was trending again. Quoted some posts of theirs below along with some material from a couple of interesting replies;

Iran is not an Islamic country as the overwhelming majority of Iranians have publicly denounced that religion.

Iranians are assigned “Muslim” at birth by the state and cannot legally change that designation as the penalty for apostasy under Sharia law is death.

Most Iranians are irreligious/borderline atheists, but a collective yearning for the revivalism of Zoroastrianism is felt.

The account also seems to yearn for the good old days of the Shah;

Source

Which suggests a more nuanced 'historical memory' than my impression that the Shah was hatred with a passion. Clearly he was in the late 70's, but at least there was an amazing economy going with decent personal freedoms.
During his 37-year-long rule, Iran spent billions of dollars' worth on industry, education, health, and military spending, and enjoyed economic growth rates exceeding the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Likewise, the Iranian national income rose 423 times over, and the country saw an unprecedented rise in per capita income—which reached the highest level at any point in Iran's history—and high levels of urbanization.

Lastly the account uses Persian 'inspirational' graphics to drive home their anti-Islamic narratives;

Seems the revolution is still ticking over. Hearts and minds. This account would be targeting Iranians overseas since I don't believe twitter is available in Iran.

The people truly are.

Anthony Bourdain - Parts unknown- Iran was an eye opener for me.
Some time ago I saw a documentary on Iran, and gosh it is a country full of beauty and rich history. Every Iranian I've met has been absolutely wonderful (including several coworkers).
It is #1 on my places to visit. I may not see it any time soon, but of all the places on this planet, it is the one I want to see most before I punch my ticket.
