iRiver is generally great. lots of features & solid products but tends to be more expensive than most others

I have a RIO Forge and the damn thing is awesome. Only has 256 onboard, but has a slot for an SD card and such that you can upgrade the memory with. Its awesome, no problems whatsoever.

The Creative Zen Micro is a great alternative, and costs $200. I just ordered one myself yesterday, actually. Every review I've read praises it.

Give it a look.

Please say a brand name not just some model number.
They're iRiver models, 20 and 40gb respectively.

As long as it supports directory structure I wouldn't mind. Unlike many people my collection is organized and uniformly tagged, not just a mess thrown into a folder labelled "music" or what-not.

Same, I don't use the database function for my H120, I use the file tree format. My music is organized, etc. no need for anything else.

I'm slowly eating away at my H140 in terms of space. Already close to only 10GB left and I have loads of songs not even on it.

The bigger the better. You will realise this too late if you go with a small capacity device. Try for a H20 if/when they come out.

$299 msrp for 5gb. also has a bunch if firmware bugs. Rio Carbon is a better choice. Almost no firmware bugs, gapless playback

The iRiver official website says $249 for 5GB, $279 for 6GB and $299 for 20GB.

it will play your titled tracks in alpabetical order. I  my iRiver H10 5gb. Dropped it many times, damn thing keeps going. The shuffle works great on it too. you can also create playlists and have it play in that order if you wish.

No, its not true. I have an H10 (20 gb) and you CAN play them in alphapetical order, if you choose, or you can play an album by track number. Its a really nice player, especially if you want to use subscription based music store (i use yahoo and it works perfectly). Honestly, though, if you own all your music already I would get an Ipod, just because of the interface. BUT (and this really was a big but for me) get the iriver if you want to "rent" your music. I like paying 5 bucks a month for all i can listen to.

I also use the WMP interface and would go even beyond saying it isn't that horrible and say that its pretty darn good.

I just meant that, rather than buying a bunch of CD's at 10-15 bucks a pop, you can pay 5 dollars a month for all of your music (you still sync and organize via WMP).

It might be a bigger deal to me because I got my CDs jacked a year and a half ago and couldn't even begin to think of re buying a hundred CDs.

ah, i see what you are saying. I get my music from some sources where I dont have to pay. legal? yup. I buy cds only when they dont profit the RIAA, hence at concerts and the like.

Although I dont put any other down, I'm just happy with the choice I made. 230 shipped from NewEgg, then another 20 for the car charger. now i'm just gonna wait till I have another 80 for the cradle and extra battery
