I saw Iron Man last night, and found it somewhat underwhelming. I never read the Iron Man comics, but have a working knowledge of the character and his origin story, so I was able to watch the movie for what it was without any fanboy baggage to the source material.
That being said, I really didn't enjoy it.
The first 30 minutes was amazing...introducing Tony Stark as an arrogant corporate mogul and womanizer...his capture, and subsequent escape...all done very well...
And then the story kind of drifted off.
I understand that the press conference upon his return marks the point of the film where Tony Stark decides to shift the focus of Stark Industries and his research, but they never really provide any justification behind his wanting to build flight suit technologies that ultimately become the Iron Man of the comics?
Which leads to the revenge action sequence of his taking out that military leader with a hard on for Genghis Khan...so Tony Stark builds the suit so he can fly around the world destroying the weapons built by Stark Industries that find themselves in the hands of evil doers? Not sure if this story arch exists in the comics, but I didn't feel that it flowed very well in the movie...the pacing was off, as was the CNN-esque expose that sets Tony Stark into superhero mode...felt rushed IMO.
Also, they never really explain the justifications or reasons for Jeff Bridge's character arch...from friend and mentor to nemesis...it almost seemed like an after thought so that they could introduce the battle of the suits at the end of the movie.
Of all the superhero movies out there, I would put Iron Man at the middle of the pack. Not great, but certainly not horrible.
