Wow. That's quite a claim. It tops X-Men 2? (Which is great all around)

I think it does. I liked X-Men 2, but Iron Man pretty much trumps it.

Too bad that the X-Men and Spider-Man series both bombed on their third iterations.

I'll definitly redbox this one tho when it comes out, since it sounds like they actually made it work.

if he's a great actor, why would him as a superhero be any different? I'd liken it to Christian Bale and Batman Begins. Bale is an amazing actor, and was able to get into the Batman character, a notably darker and gloomier movie too, no less. I actually didn't have too many doubts with Iron Man, even from the beginning, just because Downey is a damn fine actor, and I have yet to question his ability to play the character. Now, what I'm most interested in seeing is what the character is like at the end of the movie...

+

The difference is that Downey is has become a crusty old on again off again rehabbing crackhead who's always played more intellectual roles rather than ones with any physical presence. He's in his 40's but is closer to his 50's given what he's put his body thru.

I'm sure he did a few billy blanks sessions to get ready for the role, but anything beyond that I'd expect there to be more hgh and cgi than anything else. In fact it would be less of a surprise to see Krusty the Clown cast in Nike commercials than Downey as a superhero! I'm not suggesting that whoever cast Downey as a superhero was on more crack than he ever was, but that the outcomes would be similar if he was...

And please don't compare Downey as a similar superhero to Christian Bale. Bale is a superhero in real life afaik, which is simply why he plays the role so well on camera.

Are you at all familiar with Tony Stark from the comics?

Easily. X2 had a lot of cheese.

Iron Man's script is a lot more intelligent too. RDJ pulls it all together; the humor is very sharp.

It actually makes sense to cast Downey Jr. for the role. From here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man

Eventually, Stark's heart condition is discovered by the public and cured with an artificial heart transplant. However, Stark also develops a serious dependency on alcohol. The first time it becomes a problem is when Stark discovers that the national security agency S.H.I.E.L.D. has been buying a controlling interest in his company in order to ensure Stark's continued weapons development for them.

With the support of his then-girlfriend, Bethany Cabe, his friends and his employees, Stark pulls through these crises and overcomes his dependency on alcohol.

Movie was alright. It was not X-Men or Spiderman good. Nowhere remotely close to Batman Begins good.

The first 5-10 minutes are incredible. There's a few relatively big plot holes. Robert Downey Jr. was great as Tony Stark. Stay after the credits for a 15-second addendum. A couple cheesy scenes as to be expected from these Marvel movies.

Overall - good, not great.

Yeah...seeing RDJ playing a drunken playboy was quite the strectch for him.

Movie notes:
I saw it in an almost completely empty movie house in one of the busiest malls in NC. I guess everybody is waiting until Friday night? sucks to be them.

Previews before the movie:
Indiana Jones
Batman
Sex and the City
Hulk (oh shit...I think they are going to do the TV series 'lone stranger' angle - Hulk still too cartoony for my taste)

I can appreciate that, altho those issues are not marketed at all in the trailers - only superhuman abilities with cocky superheroic ambitions...hardly eluding to a superhero with baggage, or anything remote to roles that Downey is usually in (with exception of the 'cockiness'.)

On the other hand Bale portrays angst-ridden tormented psychies(?) as good as anyone - which helped make him an oustanding Batman, atleast as christopher nolan portrays batman. He's also a very 'physical' actor as well, which made it additionally believable.

It sounds like Downey's done a good job tho and maybe it fits more than my first impression...he's always been one of my favorite actors...but seeing him as a superhero is initially 'jarring', lol.

sorry.. you're COMPLETELY wrong on this one. instead of ASSUMING he's going to suck.. why not just go see it and for yourself. He 100% pulled off the character of Tony Stark. and more even! Compared with all the other superhero actors.. RDJ definitely did the most with this one. Probably the best superhero acting and character immersion ever.

Seriously.. he's THAT good in this movie.

Saw the 8p showing last night. The movie was great!

Pretty much my only gripe was that I wanted even MORE action. Iron Man flying/hovering was just too cool and the repulsor blasts were fantastic. RD Jr. was a perfect Tony Stark. IMO, the best Marvel adaptation to date. Not quite up to par as Batman Returns, but definitely a worthwhile movie.

God, ain't that the truth. Why the hell they insist on tampering with a proven formula (director, overhall feel of the movie, etc.) is beyond me. they have a guaranteed cash cow, al they have to do is arrange all the pieces the same way they did the last time but merely toss in a new script. But no, instead, they let these douche bags that should never be allowed to offer recommendations for future iterations much less direct them take the movies in radically different directions.

Why kill a successful movie franchise off prematurely? That's just fucking with future profits :/

Spider-Man 3 still had the same director. The problem was that Raimi had Venom pushed on him and he doesn't like Venom at all. He prefers the older Spider-Man villains.

X-Men 3 did have a different director but that was because the original director (Singer) left to direct Superman Returns instead. He reportedly did not get along with the Producers of the X-Men movie though.

I knew I should have thrown my son an Iron Man birthday party at the movie theater this weekend. We've got family coming to town, a t-ball game on Satuday, my son's birthday part at a Lazer Tag center on Saturday, church on Sunday, another kid's b-day party on Sunday, and another T-ball game on Sunday. I'm booked. There's no way in hell I'm seeing Iron Man until next weekend.

Sucks!

Hmm... well of course you're right with Spiderman, and despite him fucking up SM royally he's still among my favorite directors. This goes back to Evil Dead/Xena/Etc. (cheesball roots ftw!)

What still fits my rant though is the Batman series as well as X-Men.

Please tell me he dons the WAR MACHINE suit somewhere in the movie... omg I would cream my pants. Still one of my favorite Marvel covers to date (Iron Man grey War Machine).
