Wow. That's quite a claim. It tops X-Men 2? (Which is great all around)

Of all the movies I'd expect to be good, the last one would be one with Robert Downey Jr. as a superhero. A great actor, but a superhero??...give me an fvcking break, lol!
I'll definitly redbox this one tho when it comes out, since it sounds like they actually made it work.
if he's a great actor, why would him as a superhero be any different? I'd liken it to Christian Bale and Batman Begins. Bale is an amazing actor, and was able to get into the Batman character, a notably darker and gloomier movie too, no less. I actually didn't have too many doubts with Iron Man, even from the beginning, just because Downey is a damn fine actor, and I have yet to question his ability to play the character. Now, what I'm most interested in seeing is what the character is like at the end of the movie...

The difference is that Downey is has become a crusty old on again off again rehabbing crackhead who's always played more intellectual roles rather than ones with any physical presence. He's in his 40's but is closer to his 50's given what he's put his body thru.
I'm sure he did a few billy blanks sessions to get ready for the role, but anything beyond that I'd expect there to be more hgh and cgi than anything else. In fact it would be less of a surprise to see Krusty the Clown cast in Nike commercials than Downey as a superhero! I'm not suggesting that whoever cast Downey as a superhero was on more crack than he ever was, but that the outcomes would be similar if he was...
And please don't compare Downey as a similar superhero to Christian Bale. Bale is a superhero in real life afaik, which is simply why he plays the role so well on camera.

It actually makes sense to cast Downey Jr. for the role. From here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man
Eventually, Stark's heart condition is discovered by the public and cured with an artificial heart transplant. However, Stark also develops a serious dependency on alcohol. The first time it becomes a problem is when Stark discovers that the national security agency S.H.I.E.L.D. has been buying a controlling interest in his company in order to ensure Stark's continued weapons development for them.
With the support of his then-girlfriend, Bethany Cabe, his friends and his employees, Stark pulls through these crises and overcomes his dependency on alcohol.

I think it does. I liked X-Men 2, but Iron Man pretty much trumps it.
Too bad that the X-Men and Spider-Man series both bombed on their third iterations.

God, ain't that the truth. Why the hell they insist on tampering with a proven formula (director, overhall feel of the movie, etc.) is beyond me. they have a guaranteed cash cow, al they have to do is arrange all the pieces the same way they did the last time but merely toss in a new script. But no, instead, they let these douche bags that should never be allowed to offer recommendations for future iterations much less direct them take the movies in radically different directions.
Why kill a successful movie franchise off prematurely? That's just fucking with future profits :/

Spider-Man 3 still had the same director. The problem was that Raimi had Venom pushed on him and he doesn't like Venom at all. He prefers the older Spider-Man villains.
X-Men 3 did have a different director but that was because the original director (Singer) left to direct Superman Returns instead. He reportedly did not get along with the Producers of the X-Men movie though.
