Do you have the latest drivers for you motherboard as well as the latest BIOS revision? To get the devices to go onto other IRQs go into device manager and remove the items in question then shut down. When it is booting back up go into your BIOS and look for ACPI(I forget what it is under) and take it of auto. Once that is done reboot and it should be fine. You may have to remove the cards from device manager as well as physically take them out of the board and put them in one at a time. I recently had to do the same thing with my machine.

Sharing IRQ's is fine in todays PC's. However, you really don't want to have a video card sharing with anything (or any other big perif). If you have enough room, keep the PCI slot that is next to the AGP slot empty. It's always a good idea to shuffle your PCI cards to help minimize issues...

Doc is correct, except...sharing IRQ's is fine, but only if the cards are good at it. Make sure you skip PCI 1 then populate the PCI slots in order....don't SKIP SLOTS. Often, the best way to resolve these issues is physically moving the cards around. Check your mobo manual for a diagram that shows sharing assignments.

It may also help to disable your COM ports in BIOS. That frees up 2 IRQ's. If you don't need it, disable Legacy sound support for your sound card, this free's up another IRQ.

Good Luck!

The only pci card i have is S/B live 1024 sound card. Graphics card is AGP. And Modem is ISAPNP with video capture.Witch takes up two IRQs but is it normal for all IRQs to be full.

Yes it's normal. There are usually only a few IRQ's available for add in devices (normally 5,9,10,11), the rest are taken by the system. The trick is optimizing the usage so sharing is minimized. As before, this is primarily done by moving cards around and, somewhat, in device manager. DM is pretty stubborn though and frequently won't let you randomly assign IRQ's.

A good technique is to pull all the cards, then add them in one at a time to get the desired IRQ's assigned. For example, I like my sound card on IRQ5, but if a modem is in first, it will usually take 5 and the sound will go to 10 or 11. It's a real fun game! LOL

Badthad is right. A suffle of PCI slots and the sequence in adding the cards one by one will give you the settings that you need. But you have to be patient.
The PCI slots have IRQs assigned by default. Often you can change them in Setup but I would recommend you to play with the cards in different slots instead of changing the default IRQ (it may become really messy)

Tryed moveing sound card to pci slot 2 but ended up whith 7 things on IRQ 11 sound ,graphics,ACPI IRQ holder for pci IRQ steering this on 3 times, and VIA tech 3038 pci to usb universal host controller 2 times the other two cards are AGP and ISA slots and cannot be moved

Don't count the "IRQ holder"'s
If you have three devices on an IRQ, you're probably going
to have 3 "IRQ holder"s too.
Like badthad said, take out the modem & sound card.
Then add them back in one at a time.
I'd say put the sound card in first, then after it's installed
you can put in the modem.
Isn't "Plug & Pray" fun?!?!?!?!?

Back agian tryed every slot except pci1 and pci6 told to miss No1. And No6 wont fit because ISA modem is in the way. Would it be a advantage if i purchased a PCI modem then i could swop the sound card and modem in all PCI slots. I hope you can HELP ITS driveing me MAD:|

I don't think it would do you any good to get a PCI modem, You are not running that many things, I would leave the cards in and reinstall windows again,

When you say reinstall do you mean FORMAT or just copy windows. I started whith windows M/E had same problem then installed 98s/e.do you think it may be some other problem

You might have to do a clean format, I would make sure everything is right and set the Bios to default, I don't care much for copying over windows, You could try and disabling one of your com ports and if you have a usb printer disable the printer port,

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. It IS NOT ok for the SBLive to share IRQs with anything. The SBLive will cause problems for you if it shares with something else. Do you use the USB, Serial, Parallel ports, Raid (if you have it). If not, disable them in bios. Also why can't the first slot be used? Give it a try, unless DocDoo has a reason why this shouldn't be done, I haven't heard of any. I have had similar issues with the SBLive and Abit boards. There was only one of the 6 slots that it would work in, even when it was the only card besides the AGP graphics card in the system. I think I finally got it to work in slot 4, but I had a freind that got it to work in 3.

Well I don't have a Abit I am using a Asus A7V133 and I have had trouble with anything under the AGP, I have my SoundBlaster sharing with Communications ports and PCI IRQ Steering and something else but I would have to look and have no problems, I was just going with the Asus, But I do know if you can disable the printer port it would help on any board

any two items sharing irq's cannot be used at the same time.

now 2 things come to mind

1). in the bios, sometimes toggling the plug and play option may help.
2). if you have lots of devices you may be out of irq's in that case what i recomend is that you create a new hardware profile, when you do this you eliminate the hardware least used then you create a new profile and remove other items so you can use what ever it is you want to add.

still have one free IRQ how do i get S/Blive onto the free IRQ .

on win98: right click my computer -> properties (or start -> setting -> control panel -> system)

click on device manager, sound/video/game controller -> sblive -> properties -> resources

uncheck automatic setting, select interrupt request, and change setting

if you have a free irq (and usable) then run it there...
fyi, my live is set on irq 11
