I've just reverted to 98 from ME, and have all of a sudden started getting various fatal exceptions (The most common being OE @ 0028:C0028A06), and other random lockups and errors. I've read on several posts here that the Sound Blaster Live often doesn't play nice on a shared IRQ, and I realized that my SBL is sharing IRQ4 with the PCI to USB Host controller, the IRQ holder for PCI steering, and the ACPI holder for PCI steering. I've decided this is likely the problem, but I can't figure out how to change the IRQ of the SBL so it can live alone.
I'm running a P3V4X, (specs at bottom) and have cleared IRQ's 3 and 5, and thought I'd put the SB on one of those.
When I try to change the IRQ's in the BIOS, (It lets me set them manually for each the 6 PCI slots, but groups PCI's 3 with 6 and 4 with 5) the system hangs indefinitely on the Win98 splash screen. When I try to change the IRQ's in Win <system properties/device manager/SBLive/properties> I can uncheck "use automatic settings" but when I try to change the IRQ it says "this recource setting cannot be modified." I've read that you can change the way Windows assigns IRQ's by going into <system properties/device manager/system devices/PCI Bus/PropertiesIRQ steering/> but I can't seem to make any difference there either. I can check or uncheck any of the 4 boxes available, but the result never puts SB on it's own IRQ. channel.
I've also tried moving the sound card into slot 5, but that didn't help...I'd really like not to have to uninstall all the cards, then re-install them one at a time...but whatever it takes.
For what it's worth, I never had any problem with this in ME, but it seems like a huge ordeal in 98.
