Setup
XP 2200+ (stock speed)
Asus A7V333

PCI slot
1 - blank
2 - NIC
3 - RAID card
4 - sound card
5 - TV card.

Dual boot system...C: Win98se & D : WinXP pro.

IRQ probs - Win98se IRQ 11...VGA card + NIC
- WinXP IRQ 16...VGA card + NIC

How to separate the IRQ ?

Yesterday I did: -

1. Set bios PNP OS install to "NO".
2. Take out the NIC---reboot XP.
3. Put back the NIC...reboot XP.
4. Set back the TCP/IP settings....but no longer able to connect to the internet ! Used to work b4 this.

Using ASDL router w/ built-in modem. Ping NIC to router...OK.

Any idea ?

Have you tried disabling any devices you don't use in BIOS, like com ports, paralell...
if you don't use them? That might let the IRQ's spread out some.

Yup, but I don't really save much there. Need those ports for sysnc w/ my PDA, USB for my digital camera...& etc.

Exactly what I was thinking. Wind, what problems are you having? Why do you think they're being caused by IRQ conflicts? Elaborate, please.

Well, I was having device driver failure...the nvidia drivers. The system hangs like say after 5-10 mins of usage. Reboot...then hangs just like tht again. Sometime hang immediately after fully loading windows I narrow down to possible IRQ conflict between the VGA card & NIC.

The probs (vga hang) goes away after I've done this: -

1. Set bios PNP OS install to "NO".
2. Take out the NIC---reboot XP.
3. Put back the NIC...reboot XP.
4. Set back the TCP/IP settings....but no longer able to connect to the internet ! Used to work b4 this.

But now I hv another probs...can't connect to Internet in XP via my ASDL modem/router. Any idea on this. The TCP/IP settings is the same as b4...just tht this time...it didn't works. The same settings works on 98se (btw, I've a dual boot PC).

Appreciate reply.

I think I'm having a similar problem in Win2000. I have 5-6 devices sharing IRQ9.

Here are my slot setups:

AGP - NVidia GeForce 2MX
Slot 1 - empty (11)
Slot 2 - Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! (3)
Slot 3 - empty (5)
Slot 4 - NIC (10)
Slot 5 - NIC (10)

The number above in parenthesis is the IRQ assignment in my BIOS.

I've an ASUS A7V133 with an Athlon Thunderbird at 900Mhz. I have 256MB of memory, 2 hard drives (40GB and 20GB), a CD-burner. I'm running version 1009 of the BIOS. And I also updated my NVidia Detonator Drivers recently to the latest ones (I can't remember the version number; I'm at work now).

I noticed something was wrong when my cable modem stopped working. I have an RCA model; it has this PC-LINK light on it that lights up if it has a connection with the computer its on; I was told by the ATT folks that if it's off, it's having problems recognizing the NIC.

So, the tech instructed me to look at my IRQ assignments and when I noticed that the NIC was sharing IRQ9 with the sound card and video card, he said I should try to get the sound and video off of IRQ9.

My video monitor blanks out also frequently; it makes me have to reboot to recognize it again. I can only use the computer for a maximum of 5-10 minutes before it blanks out.

So, I'm thinking my video and NIC are having problems, so I should manually re-assign the IRQs. But, of course, I can't; I think that's because I have ACPI devices (this is kinda what those links above describe in W2K).

So, if I AM hogging IRQ9 and I'm not supposed to change my IRQs, what the hell do I do?

In another unrelated (or maybe related?) matter, since October, I couldn't get W2K to recognize my Agfa SnapScan 1212P scanner. A big pain in the ass it was, I just gave up.

Any advice?

I'm having the same probs when my NIC share IRQ w/ my GF4 ti4600. After I moved the NIC to a different slot, things seems to get better...no hang in '5-10 mins nonsense'.

Now, PC still hang once in a while. Stability is still somewhat less than satisfied. I hv yet to find the best place order for my PCI cards.

Btw, ur scanner is USB or serial connection ?

My scanner is on the LPT port. Kinda old school but that's what was available when I got it.

BTW, I had a bad NIC and that's what was screwing everything up. Once I replaced it, things work fine . . thank god.

I'm also going to up my memory from 256MB to 512MB. Things should be a lot better. I'm finally dual booting with Win98SE and W2K.

I tried to install the scanner again and it still isn't working. Ugh!

If running Windows XP look in your BIOS for something called APIC (not to be confused with ACPI) and ENABLE it. Next time you reinstall your OS, do not do the f6/Standard PC trick... repeat, do NOT do that. Let ACPI (not to be confused with APIC) do it's thing and voilla, you will have something like 24 IRQ's instead of 15 (not sure about these numbers but it's something like that). APIC also handles your IRQ's *MUCH* better and your overall system responsiveness will greatly improve. This is one of the most unknown killer tweaks out there. Sad most people know nothing about it. Of course your motherboard has to support it though... so you'll have to snoop around in there.

Lastly, move your PCI devices around and try different slots, this will change their IRQ's.

It's an old thing..sure...but still GOLD. Look thru ur bios. The parallel port should be "EPP" instead of "ECP+EPP". C if this work out fine.

Tht's wht I do. But the VGA & Raid controller still share @ IRQ16. Seems tht WinXP don't want to use other free IRQ.

Take out all your cards and install Windows XP! My god its that simple! I dont know why you are messing with your parallel port!
