Phone rings this morning, and since 90% are calls for her my wife answers, then about a minute later she is yelling for me and sounding freaked. I hustle to the phone and its some lady saying she is a treasury agent and there is a warrant for my arrest in an hour and a half due to some tax issue. I start to explain we are certain no issue exists, and she gets threatening, saying my records don't matter, do I want to stop the arrest process or not.

Then it dawns on me, IRS scam. When I say so they just hang up, but wow, what a jolt. I can easily see how many people fall for the scam. I filled out the form at www.tigta.gov and the notice there and on the IRS site says people have lost $14 million to the scam.

Yeah...idiots.
No matter how many times to fill out that form, they do NOTHING.
They really need a rapid response team, instead of it taking months/years.

Yeah, they were kind enough to leave a message on my answering machine a week or so ago.

Unfortunately a very common scam (for years now) especially at this time of year. I was plagued with a variation of this call about a month ago-my call was a robocall (from out of state) from someone with lawsuit papers to serve on me unless I paid up immediately. Left a message a half dozen times until I complained to their phone service provider.

I got one of these yesterday, and it shows up as 'Unknown' and the phone number is '---------------'.

Is there anyway to automatically block any call without a real phone number listed? I'd also like to block any call that comes from a 'City, State', like 'Peoria, Illinois' or 'Dayton, Ohio'; 99% of junk calls are listed that way.

I wonder why we don't get these on cell phones, but only on landline/voip setups.

The best thing is to just report them on the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY. Once there is enough calls they will get fined and shut down. In my business, we are registered on the DO NOT CALL list and report every fax or spam call that comes in.

Why can't police brutalize and kill these phone scam assholes instead of people selling cigarettes?

They/scammers own high priced lawyers, the people making a living selling single coffin nails just die quietly unless recorded on video.

Why would you condone brutalizing an unarmed person just making calls? I'm sure they are on their way to college, and would be a tragedy if they were taken from us. Scammers lives matter.

You do get them on yer cellphone. It's actually easier to block on your cellphone than a landline. On voip your voip settings will/should have a place to enter blocked numbers. Both cell and voip have access to group lists too which is awesome. On my phone I use true caller. I used to use extreme call blocker but it sort sucks now. True caller is great with lists and of course it tracking down caller id and location for you.

If yer still on archaic landline, you can enable call block if you have it.

I've heard of debt collection scams that sound very similar to this. Claiming owed taxes instead is more insidious because most people pay taxes and at least hypothetically could owe money due to errant reporting.

I wonder how these scumbags live with themselves. I hope someone comes up with some method to counter-scam them into revealing information about themselves.

No apps needed, just ignore anything that you don't recognize. It's bulletproof.

I'm kind of a bored person and 7/10 incoming calls on my phone are scams so I try to spend some time with the caller. I've asked them various questions including this. It's too bad they hang up so quickly.

Some of my favorites:

Do you blabber on and on to your family at dinner time too?
Do you cold call women for pussy?
If I had a bag of dicks, how many would it take for you to shut up?
What do I want the loan for? Hookers and blow, mostly for blow though.

I love running those callers around till they hang up. I had a guy call from india and I couldn't understand his accent. he kept saying he was from Microsoft and I would say, no I'm not with Microsoft. he would talk some more and say that i have a virus and I would say, I'm not sick, but let me check with my wife. "how did you know she was sick?"

Eventually they hang up, but the challenge is to see how long they will hang on until they finally give up.

I would pretend to take hostages while having the person on the phone. Pull a gun and let them know if they dont have a helicopter ready to take me across the border in 15 minutes I'm going to start killing people.
