I still want to see a rebuttal from the people who say that 10*0.9999..... != 9.9999..... This infinite series makes it quite clear.

Oh, and bump!

(From the poll result) Its amazing to see that almost half the people here have not taken math courses above Algebra 2.

I think that there are too many people on these forums that have no concept of infinity.

".9r * 10 = 9.9r" is flawed in the sense that the .9r of 9.9r no longer has the same value. It is in this sense that the use of
9*0.9r = (10-1)*0.9r = 9.9r - 0.9r = 9 = 9*1
9*0.9r = 9*1
0.9r = 1
is flawed.

How can you say this and not provide any evidence? I thought we went through this already. If you want anyone to belive your claims then you need to support them.

I'm still waiting for Kyteland to prove that .999... can be divided by 10....

0.999... = 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ...
0.999.../10 = (9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ...)/10
0.999.../10 = 9/10/10 + 9/100/10 + 9/1000/10 + ...
0.999.../10 = 9/100 + 9/1000 + 9/10000 + ...
0.999.../10 = .09 + .009 + .0009 + ...
0.999.../10 = 0.0999...

Would there be anything else?

I dunno, I'm still not happy until the polls show that > 50% of the people agree that they're equal.

Kyteland, you're wrong about the answer because you cannot perform the function. Your oversimplified answer is no proof.

sadly, he isn't trolling; he just isn't very bright. Again, it's like arguing that the letter A isn't before the letter B. Either you understand the rules of the number system or you don't.

Hector, if anyone is trolling it's the small minority of mathematical geniuses spouting how they understand math and nobody else around here gets it unless 1=.999...; they're pretty easy to spot since they start every one of their rebuttals in the thread with something akin to "You really don't understand math..."

name the number between 1 and .999...

if you can't, you're the troll.

We'll call that number "x".

Here ya go: x=1-1(1/10^n);where n -> infinity

what exactly is the limit of 1/10^n as n -> infinity? It couldn't be zero, could it?!?
So x would equal 1 - 0 = 1
