Pretty much.
You could be a millionaire in NYC or Tokyo and your life would still suck. Traffic so dense you can't even drive a car anywhere. It takes 2 hours to get to work then 2 hours to get home. You can't ride a horse. I will kill myself if my life gets that horrible.

You don't know what fun is until you've had a game of drinking and shooting. The way you play is simple. Drink 3 beers before you start shooting. Now suspend bottles of water from something like a swing or on top of a fence. Get 100 yards away and shoot at the bottles. If you hit it, the other guy takes a drink. Good times.

If I was a millionaire in New York I'd get a high-rise one block from work and call it a day.

Considering I know very few families who make anything close to 100k a year, let alone as an individual, yes. It is still very good. Unless for some reason you think a big ass house and nice cars are necessities on top of a bunch of other toys and luxuries.

Yes, location matters, but on a whole I don't think people would be upset with making that kind of money.

I guess that's a valid point. If I didn't mind blowing $1500/month on rent, I could live 1 block away from work. That would be so tits, I can't even describe it. Extra half hour of sleep every morning. I could work as late as I want without having to fuck around with horrible bus service after 6pm or pay retarded parking fees.

$100,000 per year is more than double the median salary in the US. It would be hard to say that $100,000 was not a "good" salary. But it depends on a lot of things. If you're the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, $100,000 is a pretty poor salary. For the vast majority of people on Earth, $100,000 is a stellar salary.

Where I live, $100K a year is solid middle class. Nothing special.

I made that much a few years ago while doing some IT consulting work. It's not as much as you think it is... after taxes and my regular bills, I only had about $10K left over to save.

100K is still a significant salary. If you are doing 75K+, you are doing pretty good.

Thats 9900 more than most people can save these days.

I just want to make 50,000 god dammit

I made 57 that one full year I was at Hynix. Not nearly as nice as I thought. After taxes and bills I had little left over. Tried to be efficient too but it was always a challenge saving.
And when I went up to Portland and worked at Tektronix I made considerably less and the cost of living was much higher.
Ran through all those savings in 6 months. Told my boss I needed a lot more or I'd have to quit and move back home.

I live near the Twin Cities and $100k can support a family of four.

If you're the type of person that has to have car loans and CC debt up the ass, then, no, you probably won't find $100k is enough.

$100k is still a very good salary but not the "OMFG you make $100k" like it was 10+ years ago.

EDIT:

According to Paycheckcity.com, $100k/year in Minnesota with 4 allowances (family of 4), 10% saved for 401k, $250 per paycheck for health insurance, gives one a 2 week paycheck of $2,550. That's $5,100 every 4 weeks.

This could be their monthly expenses:

$1,400 Mortgage
$300 Utilities (Elec, Gas, Water, Sewer, Garbage)
$100 Cell Phones
$150 TV and Internet
$100 School Lunches for 2 kids
$100 Car Insurance
$300 Car Payment
$200 Misc (Life insurance, student loan, etc.)

$2,650 Total expenses

$2,450 Disposable income

If the family saves $850 per month and lives off of $1,600, that's a very comfortable wage.

it depends how much of your life you gave up to get there and how hard you have to work for it

It's a matter of education and career choice.

In my experience, PhDs in the semiconductor industry hit six figures within a year (or three or five) out of school. The analog and RF circuit design folks that I know make more than the semiconductor device and fabrication folks. This is just in my own little world.

I'm fairly certain that ChemE PhDs still make the most of any of the engineers.

I'm under the impression that lawyers and investment-types make multiples of six figure incomes and would look down on at an engineer's salary.

Lol @ anyone saying it's not a lot of money. Even in LA or NY that's a great salary. Many many many times the median income anywhere.

Where I live, $100,000 is almost 5 times the median income. You can live really good on that income here, as long as you're not foolish, and as long as you're don't have freeloaders clinging to you.

I'd love to make one half of that amount. When I was able to work, I did.
