the tax prep industry sure has done a terrific job of convincing people that taxes are hard to do.

100 bucks is an outrage

Honestly, if you're doing a 1040ez, just buy the damn box

I know I'm pissed! But what can I do? Better Business Bureau perhaps?

For what? They performed a service and for reasonable compensation. You should've gotten a quote first (i'm assuming they already did it based on what you said)
That is not a "reasonable" fee for preparing a 1040EZ. That's highway robbery.

you don't even NEED software if you're filing 1040EZ. When I was doing that, it took 15 minutes tops to pump in a few numbers and some basic arithmetic. Hell, I filled out a 1040A online, for free, submitted for free (yes, I'm poor). You just got rusty broke pole ass raped.

LMAO I have a friend that is still convinced that he MUST take his 1040ez to a tax prep agency that charges him $75 so that he can get his $300 yearly return. He swears by it 100% saying they go around the system and do shady business in order to get him a biggest possible return.

Back when I used a 1040EZ form, I did my taxes in five minutes or less with paper, pencil, and a calculator.

You are getting screwed.

The word 'fleeced' comes to mind, I'm sorry to say!

In a perfect world, she'd realize she hadn't done the full 1040 return with multiple schedules, and refund at LEAST half your money........or she'd be ultra-hot, and suggest some other way to "compensate" you for the mistake.......or you'd be able to get back something worthwhile.

But if you just let her do your taxes, without ever asking "How much??", then you got what you deserved. Chalk it up to a lesson learned in life, and then take the 5 minutes it takes to learn how to fill out a 1040EZ form, and do it yourself for FREE next time.

I filed the 1040EZ when I was 14. It's 9 lines, for christ's sake.

Yeah, I deffinitely had been convinced you had to be some financial genius to know how to get all the deductions and stuff, but so far as I can see for the VAST majority of people (IE: those without large numbers of varied investments and the like) it is pretty simple. I did my dad's return with him and even a person with a much larger income and dependants and lots of deductions its still pretty easy and they give you a damn instruction manual too. I mean maybe it takes you a few hours to learn how to do taxes even so its worth saving that money every year you would otherwise pay to some tax professional.

It's an EZ form... if that doesn't tip you off... does an IRS representative need to come to your house and explain things to you?
Live and learn.

Haha.

Seriously, I used to do 1040EZ by hand when I was in college. Didn't take more than an hour or two.
With my job and house, now I have to use TurboTax/Taxcut and it still only costs me <$20.

Why don't you go to Taxact.com and try it yourself? You can see how easy it is and compare to the $100 tax prep you just got. It won't help you this year but you will be set for next year.
Hope you learned your lesson.

For a practitioner that is quite reasonable. A small firm will usually bill around $100/hr; just gathering your info and putting together the paperwork will take at least 20 to 30 minutes. Add in administrative costs and a phone call and you're at $104 easy.

The communication was poor, apparently on both ends. It's the CPA's responsibility to communicate fees but it's also the client's responsibility to request an estimated bill. You should not have been surprised by this.

Most people won't go to a small shop for a 1040EZ, though; they either (gasp!) do it themselves, have H&R block do it, or go to VITA or somesuch. Most of the practitioners I know charge by the form anyway.

Dude personally it's your own fault. Someone that can't fill out a freaking 1040EZ though deserves to get raped.
