Either way, the next standard resolution will be 2060p / unless somebody finds it funny to make it even wider (many of my 1080p's have black stripes on a 1080p TV .. wtf).

common movie aspect ratio today is 23:10. thats why you see black stripes on 16:9 monitors

How could 1920x1080 be dead? It's standard 1080p resolution

Same reason the resolution of the iPhone 3 is dead when the iPhone 4 came out. We haven't yet reached a pixel density on desktop monitors that is higher than the eye detect (if that makes sense..)

I've been gaming at 2560x1600 for 4 years now, and would be hard pressed to go back to any lower resolution. Once 2560x1600 starts filtering down to the smaller monitors (and now that video cards are *finally* able to drive such a resolution in most games) it'll just be a matter of what to write on the headstone.

2560x1600 will likely never filter down. 16:9 has much more of a chance so expect more 2560x1440 monitors.

True. I would also like to see a convergence on a single format as well, be it 16:9, 16:10, or something else even more landscape-y.

It would be nice to see the next Dell 30"-er with this resolution on a 120Hz, backlit, "thin-as-a-Samsung-LED" width panel.

I've been using my two Dell 3007FPW's for years, and looking at the current crop of latest-gen monitors, I see very little progression.

The majority of the buying public can barely notice the difference in quality between 720p and 1080p on their TV screens. I doubt 2160p will succeed beyond the AV enthusiast base.

Beyond 1920x1080, there is no economic advantage to sell monitors at 16:9 ratio because they will not share the same panels as TVs, which is the ONLY reason 1080 monitors are so cheap. At 2560x1440, the massive cost benefit disappears in comparison to 2560x1600 and that is why we are seeing relatively more 16:10 computer monitors at 30" and above. At these sizes, there is a stronger demand for 16:10 panels because the professsional market prefers this aspect ratio for work. Since there is no TV market, it makes more sense for manufacturers to sell the same 16:10 panel to consumers.

In summary? Long live 2560x1600!

there is no 30+" TV market?

Until Blu-Ray or 1080P HD standard is superceded by a next generation "standard" resolution, 30+" TVs aren't going to be sold in the mainstream market at anything above 1080P. If you are watching your TV 8-9 feet away, you can't even tell the difference between 720P and 1080P until the screen size goes > 55 inches IIRC. Since most peope prefer larger TVs, imagine how expensive a 55-60 inch 2560x1440 (or higher) TV would be today. It took 2-3 years before the price premium between 720P and 1080P TVs became small enough to not be a factor. Therefore, even if next generation TVs arrive with higher resolution, they will have significant price premiums making them unattractive for 95% of consumers. This is why 1080P is here to stay for a long time.
