Is 2mb enough for broadband?

Just wondering how you guys feel about 2mb internet speeds for watching streaming videos, skype, online webcams, games etc.

I know its nothing compared to you all but is it enough?


I would be paying about $120usd a month for 2mb. A 4mb connection would cost me about $250usd a month. A 8mb would cost me $350 a month.

I'd say barely. For example, Youtube 1080p streams at around 3-4Mb/s, but for 720p should be able to stream. For everything else, you'll be fine.

Its DSL.

For example, at work I have a 1mb dsl connection.

When I download a 250mb file off the internet I get a maximum of 132 KB/sec download speed. Uploads are half that speed.

I would imagine a 2mb connection would be about 250-60 KB/sec download speed?

Downloads sound right. But uploads are whatever your ISP sets it to be. You should ask them, it could be 64kb/s or it could be the full 2Mb/s.

132 KB/sec. is a very good download speed for 1 mb/sec. connection.

Good 2 mb/sec. connection would provide about 230 KB/sec. download.

However ongoing streaming is a different story, the best way to decide upon it is to find someone in your neighborhood and see what he/she gets with a similar account.

5mbit is good enough, every thing less than that is tedious as hell, especially if you plan on sharing the connection and play online games

My experience shows that 2Mb/sec is enough for one computer do Netflix and two computers do just regular surfing basic.

Or Just One Gaming Computer, and and two computers to do basic regular surfing.

Or just online X-Box for gaming, and and two computers to do regular basic surfing.

Any combo of more than one of the "Bandwidth Hogger" and more regular computers is Not stable.



P.S. DSL that is contract for 2Mb/sec., depending on the location and line condition might not actualy provides at 2 Mb/sec. at Modem output.

On speednet I am getting 57 ping.

Upload speed is 0.54 Mbps

Using a laptop now.
