Is $440 for Radeon X800XT Platinum Edition a good deal?

Good deal? I see $545 was the best on Pricewatch.....

SHould I wait for a deal on the 6800 Ultra? I can get the 6800 Ultra between 400-450 probably....

440 is a good price for the XTPE. If you plan on playing D3 then get the 6800U.

Both cards are very fast and it all depends on what games you want to play. The ATI is better at DirectX and the Nvidia is better at OpenGL. The Nvidia does have a feature (SM3) that the ATI doesn't. It's not really being used yet but who knows what lies ahead?

Doom3 actually makes me sick!! I get all dizzy and stuff, simulator sickness I guess....

I actually play games like Rainbow Six...they aren't quite as fast and don't make me ill.....

I'm waiting for a email from my video card guy to find out about the 6800 Ultra deal....

I can also get the 9800 Pro 128 for $135 and the 256 meg for $165......all retail box....smoking hot deals...

Wish I could hook all you guys up.....

The ULTRA is dope, but TWO Powersupplies and TWO Slots is really weak....I was thinking about getting the GT...

I can probably get the GT for around $300 maybe...

x800xt PE still allows you to play DIII @ 1600*1200

there are games that ati has the lead in and some that nvidia has the lead in. keep in mind DIII is just one game

btw, how much can you get a 6800U for?

i would buy both, then sell one on ebay and you would make enough profit to cover the cost of both of them.

It's unlikely you will be dissatisfied with either card. I'd get the 6800U just to have the cool new SM3 tech.

The gaming experience should be similar.

Unless you can get the Ultra cheaper get the x800 XT. Or if you plan on using AF get the XT.

I would get the x800xt and here are my reasons.

ATI has better image quality, and better DX9 performance.

ATI has better Anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering performance.

ATI has temporal AA, which at 2x on a 9600 pro drops performance at most by 3 fps.

ATI has truform 2.0, which can make things look way better then ps3.0 could over 2.0.


It is also good to support the smaller company, the more the 2 companies are even, the more competitive they will be and the lower prices will be for you.

IMO, it's a tough call between the $135 9800P and the $300 6800GT. The XTPE is nice, but is it 50% nicer than the GT? I don't think so, even at high res with AA+AF. Put away the $150+ you "saved" for the next upgrade, or use it for a few games.

OTOH, if only the XTPE provides the framerates you want, then go for it. The XTPE may also have a quieter HSF, but if you want quiet, you'll probably have to add a VGA Silencer yourself to any of the new high-end cards.
