is 650$ a good car rental rate for cross-country 2-week 1-way trip?

i got quoted 650$ from hertz for a 1-way 2-week chevy malibu rental from AZ to OH. i used the aaa code to get a better deal. has unlimited miles. getting it from local rental places instead of airport to save money.

atot, does this sound like a decent deal or am i being served?

It's pretty good assuming you took their insurance. A Malibu went from between $36-$40 per day where I used to work, with insurance $20/day on top of that, plus taxes. We only offered 3000km max but additional would be only $36 at $0.16/km.

Another thing to take into account is most places don't do one way rentals anymore due to logistical reasons.

They always charge an arm/leg for 1 way. I was gonna rent 1 way ,2 days from SF to Portland and it was like 300 something.

i didnt take their insurance since i have AAA premium, i think that provides insurance (plus my own car insurnace)

Yeah, 1-way trips really mess everything up. Pretty decent, but have you looked at Costco Travel? I haven't not booked a rental car through them for years now.

The extra cash is probably for a one way drop fee then. I'm not sure what if any insurance AAA provides. If you use your own coverage, bring your policy papers to the store. They'll need proof you have the non-owned automobile rider on your policy. Not everybody does. Otherwise you'll have to take their collision coverage.

As for one ways, the reason it costs so much is because territories don't like to loose vehicles. They only have a finite number and it's a logistical nightmare getting them replaced. They either have to steal a car from a neighbouring territory (which also doesn't want to give up their cars) or send an employee to go get the car from wherever it was dropped. It's especially at this time of year when companies are cycling their fleets for spring/summer and stock is low.

I'd take it. I once paid $180 for a one-day, one-way emergency rental from Mackinac City, MI to Chicago.

Sometimes people enjoy a long drive and stop along the way for various visits. Personally, IF I had the time, I would drive from PA to CA over flying.

try hotwire.com (then run the comparison with other sites). kayak.com is usually pretty good too.

eh, i looked into this a little more. sounds like things can be a real pain if you dont buy the LDW from hertz. for 230$, i think it is worth it to me just to buy that for peace of mind.

unless someone knows of an equally good option for cheaper!

Are you sure you won't get charged mileage? I never seen an one-way rental where you don't get charged mileage.

Where I live the only place that does 1 ways to my knowledge was Avis. Although with Avis the reason they did, was so they could distribute their cars to certain areas for demand when being turned in. (this is what I am led to believe) so if you let them tell you which cars are in need in which areas you can pick that way. I drove from Nova Scotia Canada to SW Ontario (almost Detroit) for $75ish (not including gas) and it was 2000 KMs.

Check with your own auto insurance.

They may give you the coverage based on your policy.

LDW is a moneymaker for all auto rental companies.

They already have damages covered under their complete umbrella.

I did a one-way once didn't have to pay for mileage. It was from Alamo.

It was also a little bit more expensive than the OP is getting quoted for and I only rented it for 3 days; but it was a fun and convenient way to get my stuff home from college when I graduated.

What do rental companies do with the cars after they are dropped off after a one way rental? Does it get driven back, or does it just become a rental in the other city?
