Is a 6.5 inch phone too big?

U talking about xs max ? compared to a iphone 8 plus its almost same physical dimensions. Plus size phone has been around since 6 Plus

I use S8+ and I enjoy it.The Xs Max is wider than S8+, which would make it more difficult to hold. I probably wouldn't consider it for that reason alone.

For me a phone has to fit in a front pocket (with a case on). A screen size of 6.5" is pushing the limit but with current designs seem to work.

It is hard to imagine a phone with a significantly larger screen (say 7") working but maybe with foldable displays it will be possible in the future.

Umm, yes. My reading tablet is only 7".

The 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max is 19.5:9 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, so "6.5 inches" is not as big as it sounds. Nowhere near as big as a 6.5 inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio would be. The screen is just extended into the areas where previous iPhones had bezels, so it doesn't affect the size of the device at all.

Your reading tablet has more bezel. The difference is a lot more than just 0.5”.

A phone should be able to go into my trouser pocket, IMO. I picked up a Moto G5 recently because a bit of research on gsmarena.com made me suspect that higher res (and otherwise decent spec), smaller screen phones are on the way out (at least for the time being). I find 5" to a bit too big because it makes sitting down (without taking my phone out first) to be problematic.

My wife doesn't care about too big a screen size since she typically uses a handbag... perhaps once she starts having to throw out handbags because the phone won't fit then she'll have an opinion

Exactly. The Nexus 7 face is about twice as big, and it isn’t just because of that 0.5” difference in screen size. It’s the bezels where the 6.5” phone has almost none.

Everything is simple here. If you use a device for everyday activities (calls, messages and social networks), then this device is not for you. If you like to watch something on your device, play various games (in my case, this is the most necessary, because I like to play poker on tables from 5 to 9 people and it is really convenient for me) - then you need such a device (6.5), but remember that it is not very convenient in everyday life, since your pockets are still the same.

Yeah It's one thing getting bigger screens with less and less bezels. But we are really close to the upper limits of phones physical dimensions while keeping them manageable phones.
