is a bank teller a good job?

i've seen the same teller there for years in the bank that i go to.
she's an older woman (mid-late 40's), hispanic, speaks enough english for us to effectively communicate, seems friendly, always happy.
there's another teller who has been there for years, also an older woman of about the same age, but asian.

seems like a nice low stress job, but apparently salaries are only about $11/hr, $25k.
i guess that's appropriate for a mindless job.

Its probably a part-time job to offset some of the bills in her household and some extra spending money. I'm guessing her husband is the breadwinner and she just does this as something to do.I know a few tellers personally and while it can be a shit job, its pretty easy and pays decently enough to get you through college.

It's an hourly paid job that requires nothing more than a high school education. It's essentially retail.

I started out where I am as a teller at $10 about 11 years ago and was anything, but mindless. We had engineers coming in needing help balancing their checkbooks and would have to handhold them most of the time to get it balanced, then you have the old ladies who pocket $20 and then say you didn't give them the correct amount back (personally had this happen to me, luckily I saw her pocket it and was demanding the video surveillance be pulled, damned if i was going to be written up or fired for some old lady)

I believe they start out more now here in Dallas plus now get commission on opening loans/accounts and insurance/credit card referrals, which tellers didn't get back when I was a teller

Most people come in using teller position as a part-time during school or a jumping point into other depts such as mortgage, collections and legal where pay is better and make them more attractive when applying at other financial institutions

That sounds really cushy where do I apply?

I work at a small bank in tech, and tellers have an above average turnover rate, but there are quite a few that have been here a very long time. Though it's a fairly tightly knit group, only about ~300 employees so there's also a good chance for moving up in this particular organization as well.

The hours are great. I'm pretty sure my bank never even opens the hours are so good.

It is in no way, shape, or form a mindless job. If your drawer is off by too much, too little, or too many times....your fired. Just because someone makes something look easy doesn't mean it is. Not to mention they have to deal with the general public. IMO they're not paid enough.

A lot of elitist a-holes in here. You guys are probably pimply faced basement dwellers. I don't know any tellers personally. What makes you guys any better than them? At least they have more of a life than you guys. You won't see those ladies wasting their time on an internet forum dissing other people. So who really is the loser here?

Teller hours suck, imo at least. Monday is 9-5, Tuesday is 9-4, Wed is 9-3, then Thurs is 9-6 and Fri is 9-7.

Actually that might be a bit off, as I think Friday might even be 9-8 here, but I think it'd be a real annoying schedule regardless.

And like Linux said, it's not that mindless. You're expected to have a pretty broad understanding of the products offered and be able to relay that to customers, and you also get some real nutjobs in the branches. People get pretty pissed when you come between them and their money, and that's exactly where tellers are.

And balancing sucks.

I was a teller in high school and college. $9/hour, pretty mindless. Retail banking full of low quality idiots. Ironically high stress for a mindless job.

I think the worst part would be having to push products on customers and be evaluated on how successful you are. At my branch there's a whiteboard behind the counter that I can see when I access my safe deposit box, and each teller's name has daily goals written next to it - 1 Home Equity Loan + 2 credit cards, for example.

What is nice about a teller job is that it gives you a foothold into a bank, after a few years of hard work you can work your way up the ladder and easily make 6 figures.

After 10 years you should have a lofty title like Junior Vice President, or Associate Regional Director.

I remember seeing a guy scream and try to grab a teller when she would not give him cash that he requested, never seen someone jump 5 feet from a standstill. The reason why she would not give him cash? He refused to provide identification to prove who he was.

I now work in our contact center doing the daily scheduling for agents and 2nd lvl tech support and it amazes me the number of people calling in who refuse to identify themselves to get personal information and then get mad when we will not provide said personal information.

Like dark talked about people are crazy in person and when I was a teller and even now tellers are not paid enough, but it is a high-turnover position which is probably why it doesn't make as much as other jobs do.

its a job. its better then target or such. it is better then most factory work.

And as dcal430 said it is a foothold into the bank. a girl i went to high school started right out of school. she went to the local CC then college (NIU). the entire time she worked at the same bank. now she does something with loans or such (not sure) but i do know she can afford a nice house and car now.

I imagine that like data-entry it's a shitty job, but infinitely better than mcdonalds and probably pays a bit better.

I couldn't be a teller. My day would be spent saying:

"You know you can do this online right?"

i don't understand. balancing a checkbook is as easy as addition and subtraction. an engineer can't figure that out?

that old lady story is pretty crazy too.
i've never heard of anything like that happening and never would've imagined it either.

That's pretty funny considering most all of my teller friends have said that to me on numerous occasions...older folk just don't know how/have the patience to use internet banking functions.

They sit on hold for fifteen minutes waiting to see what their balance is.
