I used to love my 19"Sony 420GS, but after 3 years the image was not the same as new.
Like you, I thought also that CRTs were sharper than LCDs, but this is not true. Indeed the first LCDs were not good, but nowadays they are.
The CRT at Ebay for 400 bucks is a good buy, I would be tempted also. But monitor is the most important hardware in my opinion. We spend money that should last for years.
Those are at Ebay are used and even if they are in good condition today, the best part ( the first years) is gone.
The fact is that you can't buy any LCD. You have to try going into a store and look at them, not only video but also text applications. You can't do that with Dell, so you have to ask a friend or use the 2 week return policy if you don't like.
In addition to that, CRTs are heavy, take a lot of space and draw too much power. LCDs are the way to go IMO.
I am shortsighted (have to use glasses) and LCDs are much easier on the eyes. I rarelly have headaches with LCDs.
