Is a Desktop steamroller coming or not?

Everytime I search for info on steamroller, I see reports about AMD not releasing a high end desktop replacement part for steamroller.

Is this true?

I currently have an AM3+ motherboard that I got specifically to tide me over with my amd 955 cpu until a worthy cpu successor arrived from AMD.

I could go with the 8350, but I'd prefer to jump to their newer architecture if possible. Anandtech had a writeup for steamroller a YEAR ago now, and it is nowhere to be seen.

What is going on?

Why is AMD so behind releasing new chip updates?

AMD is getting out of high end desktops. They are moving their server business to ARM/SeaMicro, so the volume isn't going to be there for a high end desktop, esp since no OEM will touch it due to the power draw.

Edit: And it's possible that the 2M Steamroller APUs might be the end of Bulldozer. Their x86 products would then be the Piledriver products already out, the Steamroller 2M APUs, and Jaguar.

Never say never but it is unlikely. I really like my 8350. 2nd best rig close behind my 3770k

AM3+ is dead. If you want Steamroller you need FM2+ and only that.

And it will be sometimes in Q1 2014, if not later. 2M/4C will be the max for quite a while.

Maybe the people in stage 4 have stopped posting, because I see a lot more denial, anger, and bargaining.

I'm in stage 5.

I guess it's no huge deal though, CPUs are so fast already they're the last thing most people would benefit from upgrading. Just this morning I refurbed an ancient Athlon X2 6000+, upped it to 4GB, dropped in a 128GB SSD, added a hand-me-down 6850 1GB, fresh load of Windows, and it's snappy as all hell. Far better than even brand new crap from BestBuy/Walmart for daily use.

I mean look at this piece of crap :

$400? Seriously? 5 year old Phenom and Core 2 Duo are faster.

Dont thing so.

There is a difference between making new products for a platform, and simply still sell the same old chips. You can still buy Llano as well for example. And your "edvidence" fully supports that. Plus AMDs own roadmaps.

AM3+ is dead. Its also an obsolete platform that holds chips back. So not sure why you are so keen in keeping it. Besides that FM2+ is 2M/4C only...

The difference is that ShintaiDK FUDs without even having a glue of the AM3+ 2013-2014 roadmap. Since we know that AMD will have a new Warsaw core for the Server segment, they can have the same chip for Desktop as well.

They use the same chips for server and desktop for ages now, dont know why people only now believe they will not do the same again.

Wait and see is more appropriate than calling AM3+ platform dead. I believe any sane AT forum user will agree with that.

"AM3+ will be available for years to come" does not mean that Steamroller is coming to AM3+.

No, but it doesnt mean that AM3+ is dead either

Edit: Also,
We're planning on making some roadmap updates later this year.

Thats why we wait and see, then we conclude if AM3+ is dead or not, yes ??

Yet AMD choose to use FM2+ CPUs for all their single socket server range. With or without IGP part enabled.

For me, yes. I wont buy an AM3+ board if all I can buy is a 16 core PileDriver. But I might buy an 8 core SteamRoller.

Such a CPU would not be competitive with Intel CPUs for desktop use, so why buy it?

There will not be a 16-core piledriver for Desktop. AMDs 16-core Server CPUs are two(2) 8-Cores chips together. If they will produce an 8-core Warsaw chip for the server, they can use the same for a Desktop variant.

But then that is just a PileDriver chip, as we can buy them today. Why would I buy a 2012 CPU in 2014?

You keep avoiding the big flaw in your arguments. AMD choose not to use that same chip in single socket servers. Yet for some unknown reason you state it will be used in desktops. On an old obsolete platform they are working to get rid of.
