Is a drill press to loud for an apartment?

Its been a while since I've had a real shop, so I've forgotten how loud some things are.

If I were to get a drill press and drill metal with it, would that be too loud for an apartment?

Not really loud but messy, especially if you use oil/coolant as you should depending upon the material you are drilling.

you could prob.put a rubber mat under it to isolate. A sawsall wit a dull blade will get losts of complaints.

not if you make sure to do it after 11pm ...

sleeping neighbors don't complain.

I do have an edge wall, but it would be inconvenient to turn that into my little shop area. The good spot is sharing a wall. Hmmm...

I need a garage again.

If you do it during the day just play some music to drown out the noise. Better to have people complain about music then learn you have a drillpress in your apt.

Well, I guess it depends on how much you use it. Using it for 10 minutes once a month would be fine I'm sure, but every day for an hour would probably piss off your neighbors.

It's kinda odd - unless your apartment has an unusual layout (multiple levels, basement/garage, etc). I imagine the fbi or atf would be curious...

Which says something profoundly sad about the neutered husk of what was once America.

Drill presses are one of the quietest power tools going. With their larger motors, they are definitely quieter than corded hand drills.

Yup, it's more like a quiet gentle rumble. Running a dishwasher, or washing machine would create more disturbance.

heh, if you get a drill press, you'll have to get a band saw. if you have a band saw and drill press you'll have to get a vise and taps... and so on.

oh forgot the bench grinder too.

Yes, the motor on a drill press is very quiet. It is the noise the drill bits make that may cause some (very slight) disturbances.
But in all fairness, do not worry about it.

Don't even get me started. I wish I could set up a full shop. Right now I'm stuck in an apartment. In a few years, I'll be able to have a garage and I'll have the budget to start buying all the tools I've been without for years now.

Just go buy a Shopsmith and put it in your apartment.
