I just was given a Dell E510 that has a Pentium D 2.8GHz processor. Is this processor considered fast or is it not worth putting any money into this computer. I wanted to install Windows 7 and some more ram, but not sure that its worth it if you say that the above processor is too obsolete.
Thanks

It all depends on how you plan to use the machine.
That CPU is plenty capable of most any task except high end gaming, and video editing....

for daily use its perfectly fine.

Just for shits and giggles. Right now i'm running a Quad 700Mhz .. Yes i said 700Mhz Pentium 3 Xeon rig which i use for storage and IT almost beat the Pentium D 2.8Ghz.

The processor is just fine for a variety of apps and games. Remember it is quite a few years old at this point and processors have come a long way since it was released. It is certainly not obsolete at this point, just do not expect to be able to use the full potential of modern GPU's or max out settings during gaming.

It would run 7 just fine, but unless you are getting it for free I dont think that it would be a good investment.

Depends who you ask, I suppose. I definitely wouldn't consider it fast, nor would anyone here. In some 3rd world country that doesn't really have computers, it might be considered fast, though.

The old Netburst things are utterly crap -> slow and they dispatch a lot of heat.

At the moment, the cheapest Intel/AMD dualcore CPUs are much faster and they dispatch way less heat than the old Netburst things do...

In a healthy market, no one had ever bought them...

just check to see what type of chipset it uses
and if your lucky u can pop a more modern/efficent proc in there

Well, they were called Pentium 3 Xeon at that time and didn't have a Slot 1 but Slot 2 interface.

And, of course a bigger cache

I have 2 pair's of 900Mhz P3 Xeon's with the nice 2M cache each on the way. It'll still be slow but meh.. It works well for a storage server.

I wouldn't consider it fast, but for daily usage you'll be fine. We still have quite a few P4 and PD computers at work and they hold up just fine for web/email/word/etc.

Define daily usage. Yes, if you are doing the same things today you were doing in 2006 it's just as fine as it was back then.

If, otoh, you're trying to surf youtube, play flash games (or A-list 3d games in general), run VMs or play back high def video -- not quite so good. A 2.8ghz P4 dualie is roughly equivalent to a 1.4 ghz E21XX series. It's zippier than an Atom to be sure, but by no means fast.

You can grill a 1x1 inch steak with that CPU. Like others have mentioned it is fast enough for simple office and web browsing, but Pentium D today is considered the netbook of desktops.

You shouldn't put any money into that machine. In the long run, you would get a much better Windows 7 machine even if you decided to go with a budget core 2 duo dell. If I remember correctly, pentium d has performance issues with HD/blueray playback (cpu usuage is ranges 50% ~ 100% depending on your setup).

Well it's dual core and at one time was fastest chip around. You can use it for anything you like, If your gonna game with a high end video card, dont expect the card to pump all frames compared to if you had a Phenom or something.. gl

Heya,

It's a dualcore and it's got a decent clock. It's a relatively low powered chip too. You could use it to make a HTPC or server easily. It can also power a Web/Casual machine for normal casual use like web surfing, documentation, photos, etc. I wouldn't use it for a modern gaming machine though.

Very best,
