Is it safe to use a Sharpie marker on a CDR or CDRW disc? Will it soak through and kill the disc, or will it melt off and destroy my drive or some other sinister action when rewriting a disc?

The ink won't kill the CD but just don't write too much and try not to write more on one side than the other because you could unbalance the CD and it will cause your drive to vibrate when it reads.

<< you could unbalance the CD and it will cause your drive to vibrate when it reads >> huh? marker ink?

I use a sharpie all of the time. Never hurt my CDs. Better than using a ball point pen I guess.

I just tried your suggestion of using a sharp object and just sliced my hand. May I have your home address and telephone number for reference to sue you ?

Hmm, I thought Sharpies are the ONLY thing you could use I heard ballpoints were a no-no.

Thanks for the info, everyone . Now I have a VERY good use for my new SHARPIE markers with the OfficeDepot Jamp3 deal since I usually go through several discs per day .

No I'm not kidding. Notice I said it COULD do it. Under normal circumstances no, but I had a friend who wrote a bunch of stuff on a CD once and his CD-ROM was noticeably louder when spinning at high speeds.

Have you guys ever seen those thin metal theft protection strips that Blockbuster used to put on their DVDs? Apparently it did cause the discs too be heavier on one side, which caused damage to either the disc or the player. Now they don't do that anymore. Maybe they were afraid of another lawsuit. I doubt seriously though, that too much ink on one side could have the same effect. What could ink possibly weigh?

You're supposed to use a water soluble permanent ink marker so as not to damage the plastic, I bought a box of them, then realized I don't keep CD's long enough to care:Q

Use a dry erase marker. Works the best and if it makes your disk off balance you can just wipe it off.
