Is a usb modem better than a pci modem?

I need a new modem and I'm thinking about getting a usb with v.92 support. I don't play online games,but who knows what the future holds. Any helpful suggestions or modem enlightenment would be appreciated.

No. USB modems are CPU hogs. Don't go that route unless you have no other choice.

I tried a usb modern one time and it sucked big time better off with a pci even a winmodern

USB modems are headaches waiting to happen. Especially if you have a USB hub. Oh my, I tried that route and had nothing but issues. now it works fine on my laptop, just not the desktop. Get a new PCI v.92 modem (if your ISP supports it, and it should) you will be happy. I upgraded to a v.92 from newegg for $15 and love it. I connect faster and download faster.

I second everyones opinion on usb modems. I have 1 Zoom PCI , 2 Zoom ISA's, and a Zoom USB.
While the other three are great the USB just plain s@cks.
Dropped connections, slow connections, and it takes it about 4 minutes to disconnect.
If you can go ISA, if not PCI is the next best choice.

I have never had a USB modem that worked as advertised. By the same token, I also dislike PCI modems, and abhor Winmodems. The best value and performer is a Zoom external. There are many advantages to external modems. Most importantly, you can turn them on and off to clear them without rebooting your system. And it is also nice to be able to read the LEDs and know what they are doing. They are also easier to install and set up and don't get too involved in IRQ sharing.

I'm sure glad I asked before I ran out and bought a usb modem.
klein297,why do you recommend the isa modem? I thought the isa slot was slower,and near extinct. By the way my Iwill kk-266 does have an open isa slot.

The ISA modems I've used are rock solid as far as the connection is concerned. Even though the PCI claims its connected at 5200 and the ISA at 4800 , I swear the ISA feels like its faster.
The modem I'm using now is the oldest of the bunch and by far the best I've had.
Its a USR Courier V E Everything. Got it off this forum and it rocks.
The ISA modem is the reason mobo manufacturers still include ISA slots on their boards.

Anyone have/had a Diamond Supra Express External Serial modem before. How did you feel about these, any difficulty installing or maintaining a connection? Mine seems to drop connectivity after handshaking saying that it's unable to get a response from remote server, even after trying to reinstalling 98's DUN, and tcp/ip protocols. any ideas? thanks.
