Amazingly, give most of the kids diagnosed with ADHD a game to play (xbox, etc.), and they suddenly have no problem with attention for hours on end. Most ADHD kids only have trouble paying attention when it's something they don't want to do. In my opinion, that's a disciplinary problem, not a medical problem. I HAVE, on the other hand, seen a few kids who genuinely did have ADHD. I coached one on a youth soccer team; I had to keep my eyes on him non-stop. "Okay, dribble the ball to the cone over there." kick kick kick kick "ohhhh, butterflyyyyyy" run run run "ooooooh, pretty flower" run run run... The result of those occasions where I've been able to interact with such kids makes me realize that ADHD is real, but over-diagnosed in the vast majority of cases. Hey, none of us wants to pay attention when we're not interested in something... accepting that you have to is part of growing up.

I was that kid. I still remember playing a soccer game for a tournament thing, and scoring a goal. It was the wrong goal. I felt so bad.

I was diagnosed with ADD as a child. But my mom was a practicing nurse, did some additional research and found out that I was having delayed allergic reactions to red dye 40 causing hyperactivity. If you look up allergic reactions to food dyes, you will find out that hyperactivity is a common reaction (this is not just a sugar rush either - cough syrup could set it off).

So instead of putting me on ritalin or some rediculous drug, they simply kept me away from red dye 40. It's scary how different my life could have been had my mom not found that out.

No, like a lot of other legitimate medical conditions, it is falsely and overlydiagnosed causing the line between the two to blur.

i think part is parents and teachers can't control the children. so they drug them up so they are lumps that sit and do ******.

i have read articles where doctors are slowing down on ADD drugs and diagnoses because parents are saying they are ADD when the child is a healthy normal kid.

Also have read and seen where schools are trying to get kids on the drugs for ADD. My wife's best friend has a 10 yr old who the school tried to put him on it. they even called DCFS to get involved. the school said he was ADD but her doctor said he was not.

the counselor of my little brother's school (he's 10) called my sister and asked that we take him to a doctor. She insistd that my little brother has ADD. I think that lady is really underqualified, and should probably lose her job.

I do not think it's a phony disease. I think that if I were to be tested for it, I would be diagnosed as ADHD. However, it is something I came to grips with a long time ago and, as I've become accustomed to a professional career, I have learned to compensate for it. For example, I take a five to ten minute break every hour to walk around, read a poem (keep a book of T.S. Eliot by my desk), get some water, etc. Anything to allow my mind time to wander. Doing so stretches out my schedule, but it keeps me productive and happy.

You have to learn to handle the cards you've been dealt and make it work for you. For those of us who are scatter-brained or easily distracted, doing so can take a long time, but it can be done without drugs.

Shrug. If ADD is a legitimate means of giving me an academic edge, I'm all for it. The academically competitive demographic loves it for a reason...

parents that didn't actually wan't to do any parenting created ADD. it's much easier to drug a kid and lable him/her as having ADD than to actually do some real parenting.

I definitely have ADD... but I do think it's generally over diagnosed. Before I was put on the pills, my mom had me take a million test to prove that I needed drugs. This was in the 10th grade. Obviously my parents weren't trying to "contain" me. I was also recently diagnosed with depression, and put on medication for that too. Would I say it was fairly easy to be put on meds for depression, very, I went to the doctor, said I was depressed, he asked what was wrong, determined that my dopamine levels were low (my ADD meds also hit my dopamine receptors) so he put me on drugs, took about 15 minutes. Was I severly depressed? Very, I was sleeping 12 hours a day, skipping class, never leaving my house, never did my laundry. It contributed to the end of my relationship. Am I happy now that I was perscribed the drugs? Extremely, I feel that they are working perfectly. I'm not a zombie, I feel like I have better range of emotion than I've had in a long time, and I feel good about it. Take that nay-sayers.

I hope you never run into any obstacles in your life that can't be fixed by a pill because I don't see you overcoming them if you needed a drug to do your damn laundry.

"In work depressed individuals are liable to be slow and less productive, to be indecisive and uncertain, and to make more mistakes. At home they will lack interest in their family and will be unable to enjoy their company and shared activities, and to participate in family life. They will be unable to demonstrate affection for loved ones and uninterested in love-making. They will tend to avoid friends and social gatherings, and be unable to derive satisfaction from hobbies and leisure interests."

I hate company, shared activities, family life, I'm indecisive and uncertain and I avoid social gatherings. Based on this I'm about 90% of the way into depression. Go me! Time to go get my pills.

You missed the part that you're unable to enjoy things that you usually enjoy.

5) Was not able to have my own TV or phone or computer until my teen years.
6) When I was 3, my dad and I walked to a junk wood pile where he had me select my paddle stick. I picked it out and he sanded it down and made a handle on one end. He then swatted me with it to get my attention and then hung it high in the kitchen where I could always see it. He used it on me 3 or 4 times between the ages of 3 and 9. First time I think was when I crossed the street alone without looking both ways. He needed an effective way to get the message across. He also used it if I was caught lying to him or my mother. How would he use it? He would first explain why I was being punished. He would then bend me over his knee and spank me 10 times with it on my bare butt. Lastly, he would hug me (while I was sobbing) and tell me he loved me.

I would say all of the above was quite effective. I never needed drugs.

BINGO.
