Is AGP 8x Backwards Compatible?

Hi. I recently bought a cheap graphics card for my computer to use temporarily. I was wondering is AGP1x/2x compatible with AGP 8x, which is what my motherboard supports? I plugged the video card in, but nothing is showing up on the monitor. Are there some settings I need to adjust?

8x is backwards compatible to 4x, but not to 1x/2x (the card shouldn't even fit, although some older 1x/2x cards are miskeyed and will fit in 1.5V 4x/8x slots even though they don't work). They use different signalling voltages.

i ddint even know there was an agp 1x? is agp 1x the same speed as ur pci bus? or would agp 1x be faster because its 66mhz instead of 33?

_Some_ 8x cards ARE compatible with 2x and even 1x mode. This is an optional feature, but it is possible. E.g. Radeon 9200 series does that.

Yes there has been AGP 1x. This is essentially 32-bit 66 MHz PCI, twice as fast as the usual lame PCI bus on a commodity mainboard.
