IS an Alpha PAL8045 quieter than a stock AMD heatsink/fan?

Depends what AMD chip it is, but most likely the alpha will be quieter than any AMD heatsink/fan

Pretty much guarantee it will be quieter, and also lower pitched due to the larger fan.

Plus the damn thing is so damn big it just looks cool in there. That counts for something right? I attached a 92mm fan to mine and it is extemely quiet!

Yeah that is a definite yes as it'll be around 1/4th to 1/3rd the noise level of those AMD stock fans, you simply won't be able to hear the fan..

Pabst is a brewing company, or alternatively a formerly renowned but now less respected hardware reviewer.

Papst is a fan-maker.

Directron.com by the way has some Papst fans, as well as Plycon.com,

Rolling Rock is awful designer sludge without flavor. Grab an amber beer, dos equis is stellar. Pabst has some true competitors for worst beer however, college introducedd me to the Beast (Milwaukee's Best) and N'ice/Natty Ice (Natural Ice). Of course like the Alpha you could bring out tghe sluggers, some quality malt beverages such as Old English or the Slurricane (Hurricane). And if I haven't impressed enough with my knowledge of the cheapest beers, know this: My knowledge of computers is inversely proportional to my knowledge of beer.

Possible source for Papst fans

I don't know if these guys will want to sell just one fan, but you could always ask. This fan on an 8045 would be about as quiet as air cooling gets, unless you 7-volted the fan on top of everything else. The question is, will the fan+heatsink end up costing more than the CPU? Keep in mind that after a certain point, you may have to target other noise sources, since the PC is only as quiet as its loudest component. Video-card fans and motherboard-chipset fans can be unexpected noisemakers, for instance.

I have an Alpha PAL8045 with an Adda 80mm fan on a 1.2 Tbird retail. This fan is rated at 22.5dB. Most definitely quieter than the retail AMD HSF.

Plycon has Papst fans, you'll pay dearly, though. Better to get the Adda or a L1a Panaflo- you'll have a very tough time telling the difference, other than the price..... I think 2cooltek has the 8045 w/ L1a panaflo.

MoFunk -- have to agree with you; the PAL 8045 does look cool and is very effecient. Would you post an explaination or better post pictures on how to mount a 92 mm fan on a PAL HS? Panaflo has a 92 mm fan that is 5 db less noisy than their 80 mm fan. It also puts out about 10 CMF more. This would be close to the ultamate HS fan combination!!

Thanks in advance!!

Absolutely!! I have a stock AMD/Coolermaster HS/F for a Duron 900 and I have a Alpha PAL8045 with a PC Power & Cooling Silencer on a XP1800+. There is a world of difference. The Coolermaster is very annoying by comparision and the Alpha PAL setup is nearly silent. I still might grab a few Papst fans though to see if I can make it silent. I'll use a Silencer for the exhaust and PS fan and a Papst for the intake and CPU fan. I'll probably hook up a couple other Silencers to the Digital Doc 5 that I have and have them kick on if the temps get too high in the case.

BTW.. One of the stumbling blocks that I have is making my GF3 Ti200 silent. Actually, I think that is the main source of my noise right now and if I can't get a quieter solution for it, I don't think any further noise reduction in the case fans will help. Does anyone have a good silent solution for the GF3 card? I have been told that they don't need active cooling. What sort of HS would I need though to replace the stock HS/F combo on the card?

Sharkacorp and Siliconacoustics have the Zalman zm17-cu, passive vidcard heatsink. It's a monster, and should do the job- be sure it will fit your card, though......

That does look like a big hs. Do you have any idea if it will require that I skip a PCI slot or 2 with something like this? It seems like it's long and flat and doesn't stick out that high, but I can't tell from the photo's because it's not sitting on a video card.

Also.. Any idea on how to be sure if it will fit my VC? I have a Visiontek GeForce 3 Ti200.

Thanks again.

I've never used the Zalman vidcard cooler, but I'd plan on losing the adjacent pci slot. Contacting the vendors might provide more info.

Studying the different cards that use the same chip might offer some clues. If any of them have passive cooling then approximating that, maybe with a quiet 80mm fan on a bracket, should give good results.

Sometimes fans are just eyecandy, marketing gimmickry, as many have discovered with the northbridge chip fans found on some modern boards.

Yo,
Used a Panaflo L1A fan with the Alpha PAL8045. Can barely hear it, virtually silent.

Now that I'm older, I care about things that didn't matter before when building a PC, such as weight and noise.

Wow, mounting a 92MM Panaflo to the PAL8045 that puts put 10CFM more and 5dB less, that'd be terrific! Keep me posted as to where to buy such a kit.

Have a good one,
PCM

i don't think that the alpha cools well for its size. there should be a justification to having that behemoth in ur case.
