Re: the 6600GT

Based on my personal experience with a previous card (6800nu, which is fairly comparable to a 6600GT), it'll do Source, Unreal2 engine, Doom3 engine, and CryEngine adequately well (1024x768), in many cases enough for High settings. It will not be adequate for some older games like FEAR and Oblivion. FEAR was the last and most recently released game I ever played on it - trying to play FEAR on the 6800 led me to the conclusion that it was time to upgrade .

I have an X1900XTX which i think compares to the 7800 and it runs most games great except for Unreal Tournament III I also play COD4 = decent fps at 1280x1024, DODS good fps, Red Orchestra is sorta eh but playable ... at 1280x1024 -

I upgraded the game machine with a Q9300 and a 3870. I can't tell you if it is the new cpu pumping out high fps or the 3870

I'm still running a 6800 Ultra in my laptop (close to the desktop 6800GT). For newer games, they are borderline playable at low or medium settings, but they're usually very ugly. So playing new games on low usually makes the games look worse than a 2-3 year game with decent settings.

UT3 was playable on low (almost blurry/pixelated) with fps in the high 20s. It was still fast enough to enjoy. Age of Conan was okay on low in the starter area, but started to choke up in crowded towns (did I mention it was ugly on low settings?). The Crysis demo was barely playable on Ultra-LOW, but the cut-scenes were a slide show and I couldn't figure out how to make them play at lower quality.

This is a laptop though and it's given me a good few years of mobile gaming. I am, however, building a new SFF desktop for gaming and HTPC , so I can finally start playing current and future games with the eye candy cranked up.

My 6800GS PCI-e runs Battlefield 2 at 1280x1024 with everything maxed except texture filtering which is set at medium and no AA. It runs Xpand Rally (Chrome engine based I think on the Unreal 2 engine) and Xpand Rally Xtreme with everything maxed out and with AA on.

I just got my 6600GT yesterday and so far have only run one game on it - Xpand Rally. I can tell it's about 30% slower than the 6800GS because it lags with the AA on. I don't think it'll do FEAR at more than 800x600.

Yep, it's almost surprising how reasonable BF2's video requirements are and how easy it is to max out all the graphics settings and still get very high framerates. If I recall correctly, the major source of frustration back when BF2 was first released was due to its high memory requirements for the day (2GB, which is considered mainstream, if not a bit paltry, these days), not so much the graphics requirements.

Have you all beat. I still have a 9800pro. Will play everything I want, even COD4 at 1920x1200 on most maps and BF2 & Source at 1920x1200 on all maps. Only thing is it doesn't have SM 3.0 so I have to play Assassin's Creed on my friend's computer as I don't feel like shelling out some dough to upgrade the integrated graphics (SM 2.0 also) on my htpc. Well, real issue is that I'll probably be moving away from pc gaming to saving up for a tablet pc. The $650 HP from OD looks like a great deal but it's AMD.

An X1900XTX is substantially faster then a 7800GT & even beat out the then top-of-the-line 7800GTX in most games ... a better comparision would be the X1900GT or Pro.

I'm using a 7800GT.

I was playing Crysis yesterday at 1280x800, Textures/Objects/Shadows/Physics/Post Processing on Medium, and everything else on Low. I am also using a custom autoexec.cfg that actually does seem to work by providing a performance increase with little loss in visuals. And it actually runs well enough to where I can increase a few details. Problem is that Shaders at Low really hurts quality, but with a shader-weak card like the 7800GT, it kills performance even at Medium.

I play COD4 at 1680x1050 with most all details on low or off, but since I use SM2.0 now, I can up other details. Source games, BF2, Quake Wars, Joint Operations, all those run fine at native res and high details. So really I can play games that are a little bit dated at native 1680x1050 and usually max details.

Crysis, RB6 Vegas 1/2, and STALKER are demanding though. Dynamic lighting is a huge performance hit in STALKER (shader weak 7800GT again). But static lighting is very fast, so I use the static lighting and 1680x1050 with mid details instead of 1024x768 with dynamic. RB6 Vegas is just as demanding as Crysis I think, and the first one came out in 2006!

my 7900GT (just a tad bit faster than a 7800GT) - can run most modern games (crysis, supreme commander, cod4) on medium, sometimes with some settings on high. older games like fear, cod2, source stuff run just dandy on it with high details and 1920x1200.

my 6600GT handled the older games fine too, but just needed to turn down the resolution to 1280x1024 and for more demanding games like fear and cod2, i had to put everything to low-medium.
