Is anyone still using eBay for casual selling?

Haven't used it for a few years. but had an extra amp laying around the house, and thought I would go ahead and send it on to a new life.

First listing - no response for the winner. Sent two messages, still nothing. Sent a second-chance offer to the next-highest bidder, no response.

Relist - as soon as it ends, the winner (a different person, I checked) says, "how do I cancel? I was looking for another model."

What a joke. What are all the cool kids using now?

I used it maybe three or four times over the past year to sell random stuff (a couple of hard drive enclosures, old GPU), and didn't have any problems. I think the demographic you attract by selling certain things plays a big role. The type of person that would buy a lamp from eBay...

If you're having issues, do buy it now and require immediate payment. Don't play the auction game.

Nope. Selling wise I won't touch it anymore. Not worth the risk AND not worth the costs (paypal takes a cut, plus ebay takes a cut).

1. If it's a large item I will craigslist it - since shipping prices screw you out of most things.
2. If it's a small item and it's worth less than $20 used I will simply donate it. Not worth the time or hassle.
3. If it's a small item and it's worth ~$50+ I would attempt to sell it on forums. For example, I recently sold some old computer hardware - but I bundled it in a set of 3 items for an easy-sell price.

For an amp? I would presume that it is a decently large item right? You would do better with craigslist IMO.

I sell rarely but I purchas about a couple times a year from Ebay, never had a problem. I also use Craigslist just recently bought a cheap dell 7010. Back in the day when there was the pennysaver rag (still around?) you would get at 7-11. I use to sell and buy band stuff often.

I can sell stuff on ebay very quickly and for over 10% more than AT FS/FT, for example, making the final value fee a moot point. It's been great for me, but I only sell items that will fit in a USPS Flat Rate Box, always offer free shipping, and always use Buy it Now. That's the formula that works for me. I doubt I'd ever try to sell something large anymore, shipping is a pain in arse.

I have sold a dozen or so items this year. Never had any problems but reading these threads made me worry about my last sale. It was a flash for an SLR. Someone bought it for my asking price of $110. Their address was in the USA (I never ship outside the country) but they had zero feedback and joined that same day. That was two weeks ago and everything went fine fortunately.

My only real complain (other than the sale fees) is that you can't specify a buy it now price without having it tell the customer (or best offer). I guess you can always add an additional markup since the customer believes that you must be desperate to get rid of it at any price since you allowed offers.

I have a bunch of crap I need to put together, take pics of etc and consider selling. Oddball stuff like ECC ram that's too small for any of my servers and Fibre channel cards. I'll probably do forums and failing that I'll do Ebay. I might try to sell locally first but I doubt I'll get any bites for stuff like that.

I've sold the oddball item on Ebay before but it's been a long time. I find it's kinda lot of trouble but if I already have boxes and packing material on hand it's not so bad. I just hate to have to buy that stuff because I know I've thrown so much out before.

That's not fair.

We actually have a old glass-shade lamp from my housemate's great grandmother. It's adorable, but the only way we stand a chance of finding a lookalike for the other side of the bed is eBay.

To the OP's point, I sell a few things here and there, it's fine.

The eBay final value fees are a ripoff unless you subscribe to at least the basic store.
I only do fixed price / BuyItNow listings.

Haven't done it for a few years now, but just finally got around to clearing out ~$12K of hardware that was lying around (couple of Alienware m11x R1s, m14xs, SSDs, RAM, CPUs, etc.)
Only took ~2 months to clear it all, which surprised me.

Wait, you don't have to allow offers. The box can be unchecked. I don't allow offers, not right away anyway. Bunch of lowballers to deal with, no thanks.

They do have a "new" feature of allowing you to send offers via PM.
I've used it a couple of times for my BIN listings, pretty handy.

I just made an ad for a used Canon DSLR. They do not let you choose to rid of the offers.

I made an ad for a new iPhone 7 and yes they do let you uncheck the offers. I guess it depends. I only sell used items and this may be the differentiating factor.

I haven't (yet) used ebay for selling, only for buying. (Have 150+ feedback, I think.)

I've tried Craigslist for selling desktops, and I can't even get a bite on my Ryzen 3 1200 OC to 3.8Ghz rig.

I used to request that they e-mail me, and include their full name and phone number, and I would call them. That used to weed out scammers.

Now, antsy buyers will flag listings like that, claiming that it's a "fake sale", and that "you're collecting phone numbers". No, but thanks for being an ass and flagging my listings.

So, now I've tried listing my number, for text or call, but the only texts I get are scammers. (Out of state numbers.)

Last one I responded to, said, "can I call you". (Iowa number.) Said he had google voice. So I get a call, from a Wash. DC number. WTF?

I didn't answer them, but the voice message said that they were asking for a confirmation code to be punched in. Which the person had previously texted me.

If I had answered the phone, and punched in the code (thank God I didn't), then the scammer could have gotten a credit card in my name. (I didn't give my name, but they could probably have looked it up with my number.)

So, I haven't gotten a single legit bite on any Craigslist listings for desktop PCs, custom-built and new, for probably six months.

Hmm. Possibly that's my problem, and my friends and myself are the only desktop users left these days? I mean, we grew up with them, and they don't really like laptops. I use laptops daily, tablets occasionally, and desktops daily too. (4K UHD TVs rock as monitors. So much glorious real-estate. Can't easily or cheaply get those on a laptop or tablet.)
