Is anyone thinking about getting a pet as a companion?

I'm thinking about getting a cute little kittie from somewhere. I'll feed it til it's a plump little bastard so it won't want to do anything else except watch talk shows all day while I'm gone

damn, you're in Michigan---we've got 2 kittens we need to find home for. Unfortunately one has only 3 legs, so we'll probably end up keeping it.

InFlames> Uhm...I believe you're confusing me with someone who gives a sh*t. It's ok, happens all the time

I am. I was thinking about a dog but maybe I'll go with a cat since I work all day and cats are probably better suited to being alone during the day. The only problem is that I'm worried people will think I'm gay or something.

snakesnfrogs> Really? What kind of kitty is the 4 leg one? DO you happen to have a pic of it?

the "non-defective" kitten is solid white with bright blue eyes. No pics---my brother borrowed my digital camera about a month ago and hasn't returned it yet---and I've been to lazy to go get it.

Sounds like a cute kittie

I wouldn't call the 3 leg one defective, I just wouldn't be able to afford the additional vet bills for that one.

The three-legged one would be perfect for kitten bonsai! (tasteless joke - you may give me a 1 also)

I like dogs... If you are going to get a pet for a companion, definately a dog! Cats don't get too attached to their owners (unless you get them as the tiniest little kitten)... Dogs however can be trained and they love their owners. You don't need a litter box either for a dog - since they can be pottytrained. Also, many people are allergic to cats - but most aren't allergic to dogs.

I originally thought to get a dog but they require more attention. A cat can pretty much take care of their selves. They don't need to be walked to do their thing, they just use the litter box. They never have to leave Da Krib either. Plus I love cats as well. I wouldn't consider getting a cat, a down-grade. I think a cat would actually suit my life style better than a dog.

This winter i got my cat from the shelter. He's about 1 1/2 yrs old, but all the training was done already.

Everyday it amazes me how cool this cat is, not too demanding, yet cool enough to follow me around sometimes. I can tell you if you choose carefully you can get a pet that fits your personality. My kitty makes me laugh everyday with his silly antics.

Yea, you are wise not jumping into this decision lightly. Cats can live for 15yrs, so once you decide on a pet, realize it will be with you awhile. The only problem i have had in the few months i've had him, is i bought some food that didn't sit well in his tummy. So needless to say the cat farts more than i do, and the litter box needs EXTRA cleaning.-(i think he has allergies to fish products, guess he gets turkey and chicken based food from now on) lol...

OHHhhh, the whole manly question...(not meant be a personal attack on ANYONE)
If your not confident enough in your masculinity that you worry about what others think. Maybe there IS a reason to question it?

Again, not meant to be directed at anyone, just something i had heard a few years back...

Good Luck, i hope only the best...

A cat will definitely leave this impression, unless you are living with a female. Stick with lizards or a dog.

Dude, I love dogs. Grew up with dogs. Can't wait to get a dog. Only problem is that I'm in an apartment and with a dog, I'd have to walk it and what not. Plus I'm not always home right after work.

When I get a house, you better believe the first thing I'll buy is a dog. That way it can live in the back yard. Just make sure it has enough food and water and I can stay out late.

Totally, get a little kitty. I'm plannig on it, I was thinking that if I don't a sopt for the school's apartment, I'm gonna get a place with maybe one of my friends and we each are gonna get a kitty, I'm gonna declaw it when it's a baby so that it won't really feel like it's "missing" something, and I'm gonna get an indoor cat too, so they would be around when I am, not like having an outdoor cat where they only find you when they want food...

And they are easier to take care of too, no need for the walk or scooping the poops on the sidewalks

maybe it's just me, but I've never seen anyone take a cat for a walk and I've never seen cat poop on a sidewalk. I may live a sheltered life, though.

Funny you should say that. I tried, just to see if he would go on a walk once. lol...

Got a harness for my cat, took him outside for a walk around the yard, he immediately layed down and started eating grass. Couldn't care less about going for a walk. He does that EVERYTIME i let him out in the yard. Who needs a lawn mower? lol...

BTW- he can't go outside anymore without constant supervision, he escapes the harness regardless how tight i make it. So much for putting him out while i clean the shed.

If you work all day, I guess a cat would be better. Dogs require a lot of work early on in puppyhood to train and stuff. But if you have ANY time at all, dogs are WAY better pets/companions IMO. I will never choose a cat over a dog. I am planning to buy a dog when I move into my own place, even before a car. And a tip: buy a dog from a breeder or get one at the pound. Don't buy one from a pet store. Sure, it is cheaper from a pet store, but the dogs there almost always have medical problems, and so the cost goes way up after you buy anyway.

The whole "cats aren't as friendly and attached to people" bit is a crock. I moved into a new house a couple years ago, and the cat kinda came with the house.(which worked well, since my last cat had died of cancer 6 months prior) The previous owners had been terrible to the poor thing (what sort of owener would sell their cat with a house?) But, I flatter myself that the fatso is attached to me. She refuses to eat unless I feed her, and make a big fuss over her. And she likes to bring me little mouse/bird head gifts (adorably cute once you get past the half chewed dead body part ) I say get a kitten, and smother it with love!

P.S. Litter training doesn't come naturally to kitties, it will take some time and training. Oh and, I'm a man, and I don't give a rat's arse what you think about me and my cat.

I currently live with eleven cats and three dogs. In the past I've shared my home with hamsters, gerbils, mice, parakeets, a ground squirrel, a couple of wild rabbits, a few goldfish, and some wonderful pet rats (one of whom answered to his name, built his own elaborate houses out of cardboard and paper that I put into his cage, and liked to go for a walk outdoors on a leash!) I would love to get to know a ferret some day; the ones I have met seem very sweet and playful.

I find cats and dogs to be equally loveable, just different. As in all relationships, you tend to get back what you put in; if you lavish your pets with attention and treat them as members of your family, you are likely to form a close bond with the pet, and the pet with you. If you feed the pet, but otherwise ignore it, you are likely to have an indifferent pet that views you as a large, animated can-opener.

To quote an old Beatles lyric: "And, in the end, the love we take is equal to the love we make."

I'd like to get a woman, but I'm afraid of being housebroke. Also thay can't be trained and tricks are pushing 50 bucks a pop. Forget that.

It isn't a crock. Cats are less attached to people, I believe this is a fact. Many prefere this, and I that is cool. But an indication to you would be "the cat came with the house." They probably couldn't get the cat to move. I know many (well, maybe not "many." Three to be exact) personal cases where the cat would run away when it got to a new house, because it was attached to a PLACE not a PERSON. Sure, they liked their owners, but they liked their favorite resting place as well. THere are exceptions to the rule (maybe your cat is one), but I know about 20 people with cats and I can seriously say that about 10 of them would most likely rather stay at a house then move with their owners That is a large percentage.. Dogs on the other hand? Probably 19 out of 20 would choose their owners. Or, in all actuality, most likely all 20.
