Plenty of independent evaluations on AS, ASII, ASIII and AA. I had the older Radio Shack stuff and it was reasonable, certainly better than thermal pads. I saw a true decrease of about 4C when I went to AS. I've used both AA and AS on the same HSF/CPU combo. AS was a little better but AA still fine product.

Get a good compound and learn to apply it properly. Your CPU will thank you. As others have said earlier in this thread - the cost is really very small ($5) for the most expensive and it will last for a long time. Skip one soda

I saw a 2-3 degree (C) drop going to ASII from the freebie white paste stuff. On one hand, 2-3 degrees probably means nothing to my CPU, but it does make me feel better. And you can get a syringe of the stuff for ~$5, which will easily do 10+ CPUs. That is 50 CENTS a CPU, not really a budget breaker.

Heck, the fact that it comes in a syringe instead of a bag is probably worth it right there.

the as2 definetly doesn't worth the money (the as3 is the opposite, he definetly worth the money).
i mean, the reason i say it is that there's another competitor - nanotherm blue\ice 2.
why is it better?
first, it's cheaper, second, it's perfomance are better, third, it's based on "creamy" materials, not silver.
i think that's enough, isn't it?

Yeah so hey, maybe everyone knows this and I'm gonna look really dumb, but I'd like to know what actually happens if you use *too much* Arctic Silver. Does it short out your CPU or what?
