Is beef jerky the "healthiest" way to eat beef protein?

I'm reading the nutrition facts off a 1oz package.
Total Calories 90
Calories from Fat 15
Total Fat 1.5g (2%)
Sat Fat 0.5g (3%)
Cholest 35mg (12%)
Sodium 550mg (23%)
Carbs 3g (1%)
Fiber 0g
Sugars 2g
Protein 14g

I'm 5'7" and weight 132. I'm trying to put some meat on my bones and get rid of my small tummy. But I've realized that I haven't been eating hardly any protein at all so all my working out is exhausting me. My daily meals consist of 2 pancakes in the morning, fresh fruit or canned fruit for lunch, and total cereal or sometimes nothing at all for dinner.

So is beef jerky the way to go for protein?

I sure hope you are kidding. Look at the sodium and cholesterol content you posted. Go for protein shakes if it is that big of a problem.

A 1 oz bag isn't too bad if you're just looking for a snack, but it's not a good way to consistently get your protein.

No wonder you are tiny and exhausted after working out. All you eat is about 750 calories of carbohydrates. Eat some chicken, toss a steak on the grill. Heck throw in some sausage with your pancackes. If that isn't convenient, get a 10lb bag of whey protein and make a couple shakes a day. Your body needs the protein to bulk up and build/sustain muscle.

It looks like he is asking about "beef protein" in general... Are you guys talking about beef protein shakes or something:disgust:

The best way to eat beef protein is probably in the form of 99% lean ground beef if you don't want fat.

You need to eat. A light breeze could probably push you over. Also girls don't really like scrawny guys.

agreed, you need to eat more. where do you expect the substance for building muscle to come from if all of your current intake goes toward maintaining your current body composition?

Tuna, turkey breasts, and protein shakes. If you want to gain weight, you wanna eat mad pasta also.

I am just asking a serious question here but are you anorexic? I doubt that at your weight/height that you have a "small tummy" and when someone mentioned tuna you had to throw in "light crackers" and call that a good lunch. I find it ironic that you want to "put some meat on your bones" but you don't eat any meat. The things you mentioned in your first post as your daily meal wouldn't even be 1 good meal much less the whole days worth for someone who works out hard and wants to bulk up. You may have some mental issues you need to overcome I'm just guessing.

Actually, your h/w is not bad if you are a female. But yeah, your entire day's meal is like 1/2 of my breakfast.

The way to go for protein is chicken breast, fish, lean red meat, and supplement with protein shakes.

lol, naww, I'm not anorexic.

See, for the last 5 years I've been eating nothing but crap food everyday. Pizza, burgers, half a box of cereal for breakfast, etc were my daily meals.

At my peak I was pushing 150lbs and it was mostly fat. I survived from turning into a little piggy because my metabolism is insanely high and I actually enjoy running every so often.

Then I started cutting back and got my weight down to 145lbs for about 2 solid years, but still eating crap food nonstop. That's why I have a little tummy.

Well, I moved a few months ago and I've decided to change my diet somewhat, cut back on the grease and try eating some chicken burgers instead of beef whenever I hit teh fast food.

Well, lately I've started enjoying fruit again and about 2 weeks ago I started working out again. In the last month I dropped about 8lbs because of this and my skinny arms are starting to show some tiny amounts of musle mass.

I'll link a pic of what I look like as of 3 days ago...Let me go dig it up...

You know what I just realized? If you combine everything this guy eats in a day into one meal, you'd get a fairly decent breakfast. Pancakes, cereal, and some fruit... not bad. He's completely missing the other two meals a day, though.

No it's packed with sodium and cholesterol. Beff jerky is overall, really quite bad for you, and is not the best way to get beef protein. Of course you don't really want beef protein anyway. Fish and pork or chicken/turkey is better. If you need a cheap easy protein source go to a supplement store and buy a 5 lb tub of whey protein.

Alternatively $.50 will get you a can of tuna in water and if you buy the low quality stuff you can get chicken breasts pretty cheap too. Stay away from jerky.

lol, well, I've only not been eating for about 2 weeks. Prior to that it was 3 pancakes for breakfast, a whopper for lunch (or similar), and like a Rally's burger combo for dinner. Pretty nuts!

Anyways, Here's my pic

i do w few things..

i try and eat less red and more white meat. tuna is also great. if you are short on time or want something easy... i use canned white chicken meat from costco.. its pretty cheap and if you make it right...taste pretty darn good. just dont eat it straght up...at least i dont like it.

also, i dont know if you are a big tofu fan....but i use EXTRA EXTRA soft tofu in my after workout smoothies. i've never seen this type of tofu at american markets (albertsons, ralphs, etc) but only at asian markets. some come in a plastic container or tube.

it may sound gross but if you make the smoothie just right, u cant even taste the tofu. i got the recipe from foodtv.com

i would stay away from beef jerky.. too mcuh sodium and .. preservatives. you'll swell like a blue whale from all the water you will hold.

good luck

Jerky is usually processed junk food - eat chicken, seafood, steak, roasts, pork chops, lean ground beef, etc. If you aren't used to eating much, go up gradually - have things like spaghetti w/meat sauce, chicken in salads, etc.

All in all it looks like you should eat more food, try to cook more and eat less burger king/mcdonalds/rally's.
