Personally, I prefer BlackIce. Unfortunately it doesn't have any out-going detection, only incoming.

Personally, I wouldnt even consider zone alarm a firewall, its so basic its pathetic. I highly recommend Tiny Personal Firewall.

A third vote for Tiny (Kerio) Personal Firewall, it's the best there is. Don't ever trust a hardware firewall either, bad stuff.

Black Ice and Zone alarm caused crashes for me. Sygate pro is working flawlessly! Not just that, but there's ZeroData's BadIP Block List which you can add to Sygate.

Sonicwall! Of course you need a dedicated PC to run it, but if you have one laying around it does a good job.

I bought Zone Alarm Pro in 2001, been using it since... now some are saying it is crap? Great.

i found after using about all the mentioned software ones listed here that the best firewall for the money is a router with built in hardware firewall which can be be bought for just about the same money as a software firewall and is 10x better IMHO. but that is just my opinion

Zone Alarm, IMO is by far the best software baced Firewall. Even in its non pro version, it is extremely good. And it keeps getting better.

I've never used BlackICE Defender, so I can't comment on it. I've used ZoneAlarm Pro and don't care for its user interface. Norton Internet Security 2003 on the other hand is by far the slickest Software Firewall I've ever used. Very nice interface, lots of configuration options, POP-UP Window and Advertisement Blocking, includes Norton Antivirus, etc.

No matter what software firewall you go with, make sure you have a HARDWARE FIREWALL with it too (i.e a broadband router that does NAT).

It doesn't block cookies but of course it alerts of outbount traffic. The new tiny, or Kerio 3.0b5 also prevents against devious scripts and trojans that start other programs. Best out there, unbelievably configurable , still beta but stable.
